Sportsman '4-20s' headline Airborne tonight

PLATTSBURGH — The largest J&S Steel Sportsman purse of the year is on the line tonight at Airborne Speedway.

The Vermont Life Safety “Sportsman 4-20’s” race consists of four 20-lap sprints, each paying $500-to-win. The starting line-up for each successive leg of the event will be determined by inverting the previous order of finish. The overall winner — determined by the lowest combined total of finishes — will earn an additional $500.

Last year’s “4-20’s” winner Bucko Branham and current point leader Robin Wood enter tonight’s action tied with 28 Sportsman wins apiece since 2000.

Other top contenders include Jamy Begor of Mooers, Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh, Danny Sullivan of Morrisonville and Jim Bushey of Mooers Forks. Begor, Branham and Heywood are 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Sportsman standings respectively, six points apart.

Tonight’s card, co-sponsored by Huntley Trucking and Warren Tire, includes an appearance by the SpeedSTR Sprint Cars plus the Renegades, Mini Modifieds and Bombers. The SpeedSTR sprints and their Canadian counterpart, the REVSTAR Sprints, are open wheel, open cockpit self-starting cars powered by 2.4 liter dual overhead cam Mopar engines. They adapt to both dirt and asphalt racing.

Yannick Poirier of St-Mathieu de Beloeil, QC is the current Rev-Star point leader. Tonight’s event is an International points race for the American SpeedSTRs and the Rev-Stars.

Grandstands open at 4 p.m. Post time is 6:00 p.m.

Admission is $12 for adults and kids 12 and under are admitted for free.
