Davison adds to impressive year

Northeastern Clinton is going to miss the services of Jamie Davison after this year.

Davison, a senior and three-sport standout for the Cougars, was named the 2011 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player for baseball.

Plattsburgh High's Jim Manchester was earned Coach of the Year honors.

Davison's MVP honor caps a stellar year for the athlete. He was named an All-Star in soccer, and after aiding the Cougars to a Section VII Class B title and a trip to the states, he made the All-State soccer team.

In basketball, he was the hero in the Section VII Class B title win against rival Plattsburgh. He was named to the CVAC All-Star first team after helping lead the Cougars to their first trip to the final four.

On the diamond this spring, Davison starred on the mound, at the plate and at shortstop. The Cougars finished 9-1 in the regular season and 11-2 overall before falling in the Class B semifinals.

In 28 1/3 innings pitched, Davison allowed just one earned run and limited teams to a combined 14 hits while striking out 43 batters. He pitched two complete-game wins and threw a no-hitter for five innings.

He compiled a 4-0 record with two saves and an 0.33 ERA.

Davison led the Cougars in all offensive categories and finished with a .529 batting average and .613 on-base percentage. He led the league in hits with 20 and triples with three, and he had four game-winning hits.

Coach of the year

Jim Manchester, Plattsburgh High- The Hornets' season didn't start on a positive note. Plattsburgh went 1-3 in Myrtle Beach over spring break, but Manchester's Hornets got some valuable experience.

Plattsburgh reeled off 14 straight wins, finishing the streak off with a win over defending champion Beekmantown in the Section VII Class B title game.

Manchester guided the Hornets to a 15-4 record in his eighth season, pushing his career record to 115-40.

Division I All-Stars

Catcher

Frank Buksa, Beekmantown- The league's MVP in 2011, Buksa was a four-year starter behind the plate for the Eagles. Buksa batted .467 this past season, with 14 hits in 30 at-bats. He also walked 10 times and was hit by pitches six other times for a .652 on-base percentage. He had two triples, a double and home run while striking out just two times. Defensively, teams stole just three bases against him in 14 attempts.

First baseman

Ben Weightman, Saranac- A junior in his third varsity season, Weightman led Saranac with 14 RBI and 13 runs scored. After a slow start, he hit over .600 in the second half of the season to finish with a .436 batting average.

Middle infielders

C.J. Worley, Plattsburgh High- He hit .406 with a home run and seven RBI while scoring 19 runs in 10 league games. The athletic infielder with a strong arm helped shore up the middle of the defense.

Luke Weaver, Beekmantown- The junior had an outstanding season at the plate with a .667 batting average, with 24 hits in 36 at-bats. He had five doubles and a triple. Weaver's on-base percentage was a team-high 707. He struck out only twice in 48 plate appearances. Defensively, he took away many potential hits and made only two errors.

Brian Latulipe, Plattsburgh High- Had another great year at the plate leading the Hornets in most offensive categories. Hit .447 with six doubles and 13 RBI. Played a solid shortstop that helped anchor the middle of the Hornet defense.

Jordan Gillespie, Saranac- Junior who led Saranac with 18 hits and five doubles, including three in a single game. Finished second on the team with a .500 batting average. Chipped in with 10 RBI, seven runs-scored and seven stolen bases.

Third baseman

Austin Bradish, Beekmantown- The sophomore hit .412, with 14 hits in 34 at-bats. Bradish had a triple and double while compiling a .473 on-base percentage. He was very solid defensively at third base and also had a strong season on the mound.

Outfielders

Matt Phelan, Saranac Lake- Phelan is a self-motivated player with leadership qualities. The sophomore batted .372, with 16 hits, four doubles, 19 runs, 15 stolen bases and a .744 slugging percentage.

Joe Tolosky, Plattsburgh High- Hit .387 leading the team in home runs (2) from the cleanup spot while driving in 12 runs in 10 games. Clutch hitter that drove in big runs late in the game during the regular season and playoffs. A solid outfielder with a strong arm and committed no errors.

Dylan Everleth, Saranac- Senior anchored Saranac defense in centerfield, recording three outfield assists. Led team with a .517 batting average, 11 stolen bases, four triples. Was the only player to hit safely in every Saranac game this season. Chipped in with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored in the 10 game season.

Pitchers

Anthony Porcelli, Plattsburgh High- Continued to impress in 2011, recording three wins and a save with a 1.13 ERA. Also struck out 25 and walked only four in 18.2 innings of work. He then pitched the Hornets to victory with a 6-1 victory in the Section VII finals. Also hit .370 with a home run and eight RBI in 10 league games.

Will Love, Plattsburgh High- Had a solid first year pitching at the varsity level as a junior. In 17 innings pitched, surrendered only seven hits and no earned runs in three wins against Peru, AuSable and NCCS. Also hit .409 in nine league games.

Will Flynn, Peru- Four-year varsity starter went 2-2 with one save and had a 0.48 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 29 innings. Opponents hit just .179. In two losses, allowed just two earned runs combined. Offensively, hit .464 and was 7-for-7 in stolen bases. Committed no errors in field.

Designated hitter

Brandon Spooner, NCCS- Had .424 batting average and .481 on base percentage. Came up with some key hits in close games and big plays on defense to get out of innings. Made only one error in two years.

Division II All-Stars

Catcher

Dan Morrison, Ticonderoga- The senior finished the season with a .419 batting average, including a .654 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage.

First baseman

Doug Wilson, Ticonderoga- The junior rapped out a .448 batting average with three doubles. He compiled a .655 slugging percentage.

Middle infielders

Jeff Greenough, Moriah- A two-year starter, Greenough played second base, shortstop, outfield and pitched for the Vikings. He was the team's leadoff hitter and made a lot of things happen both offensively and defensively.

Miles Austin, Ticonderoga- Only a sophomore, Austin batted .423, with four doubles and a .654 slugging percentage.

Ryan Mascarenas, Moriah- A four-year starter, Mascarenas was the Vikings' team leader. He has a very productive senior year both offensively and defensively.

Nick Gero, Northern Adirondack- One of Bobcats' more consistent hitters despite limited practice time due to educational experience with CV Tech. Hit .261 with a .652 on-base percentage, two doubles and seven walks. Played a solid second base.

Third baseman

R.J. Reid, Lake Placid- The sophomore saw time at third base, first base, shortstop and on the mound this past season. He led the Blue Bombers in batting average, runs scored, walks and on-base percentage.

Outfielders

Bobby Grey, Ticonderoga- The senior batted .406, including six doubles. Grey's slugging percentage was .719.

John Sikandar, AuSable Valley- The senior batted .343, with 12 hits and 5 runs scored, while making some outstanding defensive plays.

T.J. Burl, AuSable Valley- The senior is a returning all-star. a great defensive play, Burl hit .294 with a triple.

Pitchers

Tanner Purkey, Ticonderoga- Despute a 1-2 record, Purkey struck out 27, walked just six and pitched to a 1.58 ERA.

Tyler Tucker, Ticonderoga- The senior went 3-1 on the season, with a 2.13 ERA.

Josh Powers, Northern Adirondack- Senior had a 2.63 ERA and held opponents to a .135 batting average. Struck out 32 in 24 innings pitched and went 3-1. Has been a consistent player for the Bobcats.

Designated hitter

Troy LaBombard, Northern Adirondack- Was a pleasant surprise for the Bobcats after not playing last season. The most consistent hitter for NAC with a .273 batting average and .455 on-base percentage. Had seven RBI, walked four times and hit two doubles. Hit well with men in scoring position.

All-CVAC Team

Catcher- Buksa.

First baseman- Weightman.

Middle infielders- Weaver, Latulipe, Gillespie, Austin.

Third baseman- Bradish.

Outfielders- Tolosky, Everleth, Grey.

Pitchers- Love, Porcelli, Powers, Flynn.

Designated hitter- Spooner.
