LYON MOUNTAIN — Maybe the Plattsburgh Cardinals should change all their home games to the Big Ball Diamond.
The Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Lyon Mountain Miners — 5-4 and 7-4 — on Sunday to capture the Champlain Valley Baseball League regular season championship.
Both the Cardinals and Miners finished the regular season with 14-4 records, but the Cardinals own four wins over the Miners — with all four coming in Lyon Mountain.
What it means is the top-seeded Cardinals will be playing at the Meron's Expos and the Miners at the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx in the best-of-three CVBL playoff semifinals this coming Sunday.
The Expos and Timberjaxx won quarterfinal games Sunday, with Meron's recording an 8-4 win over the Airborne Speedway Padres and the Timberjaxx a 9-5 decision over the Fourth Ward A's.
In the first game, the Cardinals broke a 4-all tie in the bottom of the sixth when Alex LaFountain singled and later scored on Andrew Cody's RBI base hit.
LaFountain and Tory Bouyea had two hits each in support of winning pitcher Dustin Currier. Kyle Kowalowski's double was one of four hits off Currier and David Waldron took the pitching loss.
In the second game, David Latulipe's 2-run double in the bottom of the second inning broke a 1-all tie and put the Cardinals in front to stay.
Winning pitcher Steve Burris, Bouyea and Currier rapped out two hits each for the Cardinals, with Burris driving in two runs.
Kyle Kowalowski finished 4-for-4, including a triple, to account for four of the seven Miners hits off Burris.
