Potsdam tie low point of Cards' season

DID YOU KNOW?

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team has hit a few bumps in the road during the 2009-10 season.

One of those bumps came on Dec. 4 at the Stafford Ice Arena when the Cardinals blew a three-goal third-period lead and settled for a 3-all tie with Potsdam.

That game should be fresh in Plattsburgh State's minds tonight when the Cardinals (16-4-4, 12-2-1) close out State University of New York Athletic Conference and regular season play at Maxcy Hall against the Bears (9-12-2, 5-9-1).

"That (game) may have been the lowlight of my coaching career," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "I can't ever remember giving up a three-goal lead, especially at home.

"There's still a lot at stake for both teams in this game. Potsdam still hasn't secured a playoff spot and we're fighting for a potential at-large bid into the NCAA (Division III) Tournament, if we don't win the conference."

Potsdam has been stumbling some of late, winning only twice in its last eight games. The Bears, however, are coming off a 6-3 home win over Buffalo State last Saturday.

Potsdam has five players with 20 points or more, led by senior forward Connor Treacy (10-26-36) and sophomore forward Todd Hosmer (15-15-30).

The Bears have scored 80 goals in their 23 games, but the biggest problem for the Bears has been keeping the puck out of their net where opponents have scored 98 goals.

Trevor O'Neill (7-8-2, 3.92 gaa) has done the majority of the goaltending for Potsdam.

"Potsdam has forwards who are as good as anyone in the league," Emery said. "They have had a problem keeping the puck out of their net. But, a goalie can get hot at any time.

"We need to focus on keeping the puck out of our net. And, hopefully, we will get enough pressure offensively.

"We're always Potsdam's biggest game of the year, especially over there. But, the good thing is that we get a good group of our fans to travel to the game."

The Cardinals are coming off a pair of home wins this past weekend. Plattsburgh State was not at its best in a 4-2 win over Buffalo State on Friday, but did play much better in a 4-1 victory over Fredonia the following night.

"We got the leadership on Saturday and it showed," Emery said. "We generated a ton of offense."

The Cardinals have already wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament behind top-ranked Oswego.

Plattsburgh State has scored 105 goals in 24 games and has given up just 44.

The Cardinals' individual offensive statistics are modest, with Dylan Clarke (7-19-26) leading the team in scoring. Plattsburgh State, however, has spread the wealth around with 15 players with 10 points or more.
