OSWEGO — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team looks to continue its momentum heading into a pre-playoff break as it faces off against Oswego Friday night (7 p.m.) and Saturday afternoon (3 p.m.).
Plattsburgh is riding a 15-game unbeaten streak and has the first seed of the ECAC West locked up.
Oswego, on the other hand, is fighting to hang on to the final playoff spot in the conference.
A point or two would come in handy for the Lakers, who cling to the last playoff spot by a point over Potsdam. Potsdam is slated for a home-and-home against Utica this weekend.
"We're playing a team fighting for a playoff position," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "They have everything to gain. They are in the driver's seat over Potsdam for now, but they would obviously love to pick up a point or two."
Plattsburgh State (20-1-2, 15-0-1) clinched the ECAC West title Tuesday in a 5-0 victory over the Bears. The Cardinals lead second-place Elmira in the standing by four points, with four points available for the taking for each team.
However, Plattsburgh swept the Soaring Eagles (7-15-1, 5-10-1) in regular-season play, giving the Cardinals the edge for seeding.
"At this point, we have the regular-season championship locked up, but we certainly want to go into the playoffs on a positive note," Houle said. "...and obviously keep our rankings in terms of the national picture."
Oswego is led in scoring by Kelly Collins, who has nine conference points (7-2-9). Collins' single-digit point total is a far cry from Plattsburgh's Stephanie Moberg, who is second in conference scoring with 28 points (14-14-28).
"I expect them to be physical — to try and play around the goalie to keep us a way from second and third opportunities," Houle said.
Note: The Cardinals will face the lowest remaining seed at home when March 6 rolls around.
