PLATTSBURGH — Potsdam State goaltender Hilary Hitchman earned a good night's sleep Tuesday.
Hitchman made 66 saves to keep the game respectable as the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team skated to a dominating 5-0 victory over the Bears at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"We got the job done," said Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle. "I was a little surprised we had that many shots on goal."
The top-ranked Cardinals improved to 15-0-1 in ECAC West play and 20-1-2 overall, while the Bears fell to 5-9 in the conference and 8-12-1 overall.
Plattsburgh State took 28 shots on goal in the first period alone and led, 4-0, after one.
The Cardinals, leading 1-0 on Laurie Bowler's goal at 12:59, broke it open with three goals within a 2:28 span late in the period.
Mackenzie Lee tallied at 15:48, Alyssa Belliveau at 16:15 and Kate Fairfield at 18:16 to make it 4-0.
"Our goal going in was to come out and put them away early," Houle said. "But, to tell you the truth, Potsdam played even with us over the first 10 minutes. As much as you tell the team to be ready to play, sometimes they're not. I'm sure we were a little distracted because it was Senior Night.
"But, we were able to get it going over the final 10 minutes of the first period. We were able to take the wind out of their sails when we scored those three quick ones."
The second period was scoreless and Steph Moon closed out the Cardinals' scoring at 5:25 of the third.
"She (Hitchman) played very well and we scored only one goal over the last two periods," Houle said.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 71-18 shot advantage and Mandy Mackrell stopped all 18 shots in net for the Cardinals.
"They had some opportunities in the first period, but not very many over the final two periods," Houle said. "Mandy has played great in goal all season and we've done a good job with our defensive zone coverage."
The Cardinals are at Oswego on Friday and Saturday.
