Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

Plattsburgh paddler tops Colton race

COLTON — Jeff Kelly of Plattsburgh posted the best finish at the 18th-Annual ‘Round the Islands Canoe Race on Saturday. Kelly clocked 38 minutes, 52 seconds and was closely followed by Jim Plumley in 39:17. Both men are veteran paddlers.

Thirty boats participated in the four-mile and one-mile races.

Spencer Bartkus won the 10-year-old division of the Fledgling race, and Marley Bartkus claimed the 14-year-old division.

The race featured three special awards. The long standing Veteran Paddler Award is presented to the male or female paddler over sixty years of age posting the best finish by place in his or her class. This award is presented by the Palmer family in memory of C.M. Palmer, a longtime Higley resident and avid paddler who shared with several generations his love of the sport and the area. In the event of a tie, which has become increasingly more frequent as more senior paddlers participate in the various classes, margin of victory and sportsmanship are considered. This year’s award went to Ron Morrow, a summer Higlian, who paddled in the medium-length kayak division and bested the rest of the paddlers in his event by twenty minutes.

The Phyllis Baker Award is annually presented to the youth paddler demonstrating paddling excellence and good sportsmanship. This year’s award went to Marley Bartkus.

The Chris Murphy Memorial Award is given to the woman best demonstrating the passion for the sport and sportsmanship. Chris was the heart and soul of the event through all her paddling years, always cheering others on while quietly and consistently posting top finishing times herself. Rosie Bartholomew, active Higley Association member and long standing participant, won this award.
