PLATTSBURGH — The defending Champlain Valley Baseball League playoff champion Fourth Ward Cardinals couldn’t field enough players last Sunday and now have their backs to the wall today.
The third-seeded Cardinals will be at the second-seeded Miners at noon, needing a victory in the first seven-inning game to force a third and deciding contest in the semifinals after forfeiting to the Miners last Sunday.
The other semifinal will be at Lefty Wilson Field at noon, with the top-seeded Meron’s Expos down 1-0 in their series against the fourth-seeded Airborne Speedway Padres. The Expos need two wins to move on, while the Padres need one.
Shane Perrotte led the Padres last weekend with four hits, including three doubles, while Matt Rivers added two singles and a double.
Kris Cauchon, Billy Davis and Nick Barton rapped out three hits apiece for the Expos.
Most of the CVBL teams, most notably the Cardinals, will have their line-ups bolstered by Clinton County Senior Mariners, who had their season end last weekend in the District 4 Tournament.
