COLCHESTER, Vt. — Adams Glass took any suspense out of its game in the first inning Friday.
The Peru-based team erupted for eight runs on the way to an 8-2 victory over Middlebury in the Vermont Senior Babe Ruth League state playoffs.
Adams Glass (14-10-2) will play the winner of the Lyndon/Colchester contest today at 1 p.m. in the five-team, double-elimination event.
In the first inning, Nick Uliva and Ryan McCall walked before Kyle Sprague singled in two runs, Austin House then walked, Conor Casey singled in a run, Tristan Archambault walked, Austin Medeiros singled in two and Jared McLean singled in another. Uliva, batting for a second time in the inning, hit a sacrifice fly and Nick Demarais singled.
The only hits for Adams Glass after the first inning were singles by Uliva and Jared McLean.
“We scored eight runs in the first inning and then, for some reason, we let up, which was disappointing,” said Adams Glass coach John Demarais. “When a team is down, you have to throw the knockout punch, not let them get up.
“I was happy with the win, but the team agrees that to be champions we need to play harder.”
Middlebury could only muster two unearned runs in the first and second innings off Casey, who went the distance with a 3-hitter. Casey struck out five and issued two walks.
