SOUTH PLATTSBURGH – The Ernie’s Discount Tools Modifieds will go the extra (10) mile(s) tonight at Airborne Speedway in the Charlie Trombley Memorial 50 presented by Huntley Trucking and Casella Waste Management.
The extra-distance format suited point leader Todd Stone of Middlebury, Vt., well during the DIRTcar Modified Series 75-lap contest back in mid-June. Stone qualified on the outside pole and wired the field.
McGrail started several rows back and eventually rose to second place, but used up his tires to get there. “I had a handful those last few laps,” McGrail said. “I did what I could.”
Stone has been atop the championship point standings since the second week of the season, but McGrail picked up his third win last weekend and has narrowed the deficit to 14 points (632-618).
Stone and McGrail will be tested by the likes of two-time track champion Patrick Dupree of Saranac Lake, Aaron Bartemy, Adam Bartemy, George Foley, Greg Atkins, Andy Heywood, and Leon Gonyo.
Dupree spent the week repairing the Wes Moody Landscaping No. 24 after a wild ride off the top of turn three last week. “We’ve been patching it back up,” he said. “It was fast for a half a lap. I got into the sand along the edge of the backstretch, which is dry and just like ice. There was a lot of driver error involved.”
The event is named in honor of Charlie Trombley of Mooers Forks, a three-time Airborne track champion (’59, ’60, 66).
All five weekly divisions will be in action. Grandstands open at 4 p.m. Post time is 6 p.m. Adult admission is $12. Kids 12 and under admitted free.
