Division I All-Stars

AuSable Valley's Hamilton, NCCS's Armstrong awarded MVP honors

The Beekmantown girls' soccer team went unbeaten in league play, captured the Division I regular-season title and won the Section VII Class B crown.

For their success, the Eagles had four players named to the Northern Soccer League Division I All-Star Team.

The Northeastern Clinton boys' team, which went 12-2-2 and fell in the Class B semifinals, had three players selected to the boys' First-Team. In addition, Rob Armstrong was named Most Valuable Player.

AuSable Valley's Amanda Hamilton was chosen as the girls' MVP.

Hamilton, a senior, has been a very well-rounded player for the Patriots who is comfortable playing any position on the field.

She is a three-time CVAC All-Division II selection and a three-time All-CVAC pick. She finished the year with seven goals and six assists, aiding the Patriots to a 12-4-2 record. AuSable Valley advanced to the Class B semifinals, falling to Plattsburgh High in a shootout.

Armstrong, a senior defenseman, finished up his third year on the Cougars' varsity squad. He is a three-time All-Star.

Armstrong captained Northeastern Clinton this year, anchoring a defense that yielded just seven goals in 17 games. The defense was considered one of the best in school history.

His work ethic helped lead the Cougars to the their first state final four appearance last season.

He was the best overall player on this year's team with his skills and ball control, and he added two goals and an assist.

Beekmantown's Erin Norris and AuSable Valley's Keith Raines shared the Coach of the Year award for girls' soccer.

Norris, a former Plattsburgh State standout, guided the Eagles to a remarkably successful season in her first year at the helm.

Raines, in his eighth season as varsity coach, pushed his career record to 87-34-6.

The boys' Coach of the Year honor also went to a pair of coaches: Plattsburgh High's Chris LaRose and Northeastern Clinton's Dale Hawksby.

LaRose guided the Plattsburgh High squad to the Section VII Class B title game as the Hornets compiled a 15-1-1 record and the Division I title. LaRose, in his seventh season, has compiled a 113-21-8 record.

Hawksby, in his 22nd season, pushed his career record to 279-88-30.

FIRST TEAM GIRLS

Seniors Stephanie Clookey, Jess Huber, Bailey Waterbury and junior Amanda Peterson were Beekmantown's four First-Team selections.

Huber, part of the team's Dynamic Duo (the other being Kallie Villemaire), was the Eagles' biggest offensive threat. She used her incredible speed to outrun just about everyone she went up against. She displayed a natural ability to put the ball in the back of the net, finishing the season with 21 goals and seven assists.

Waterbury, a midfielder, was the team leader on and off the gield and the go-to person for coaches and teammates.

A natural leader who put the team first, Waterbury helped control the center of the field as a central midfielder. She showed great vision and playmaking ability, and she finished with five assists.

Clookey, also a midfielder, was the most intense player for Beekmantown, and she focused on helping make her team and teammates better. Clookey helped provide motivation for the Eagles with inspirational quotes before every game.

On the field, she showed excellent vision and really made her presence known. She finished the season with two goals and eight assists. The eight assists were second-most on the team.

Peterson was the core of Beekmantown's defense that gave up just 10 goals all season. She is soft-spoken but led by playing with intelligence.

She has a great soccer sense and was the most controlled and composed player on and off the field for the Eagles.

Megan Colby and Cammey Keyser made the First Team for AuSable Valley.

Colby, a senior forward, was a First-Team CVAC All-Division II pick last year. She has been a consistent goal-scorer for the Patriots the past three years. She is a versatile player who can also take up a spot in the midfield.

Her ability and comfort level on the ball made her one of the most productive players in the league.

She finished the year with 10 goals and seven assists.

Keyser, a senior, was a CVAC All-Division II and All-CVAC pick in 2010 who moved from sweeper to midfielder this season and even saw significant minutes as a forward, proving her versatility.

Her ability to attack players one-on-one allowed her to score many big goals for the Patriots this year. She is a well-rounded player that is comfortable no matter where she is on the field.She tallied nine goals and seven assists this season.

Plattsburgh High, which went 9-7-2 and lost to Beekmantown in the Class B title game, had two players chosen.

Justine Rotz, a senior defender, was a three-year starter for the Hornets and a CVAC Division I All-Star last year.

A captain this year and last, she finished this season with one goal and one assist. In the title game, she helped hold Beekmantown to just one goal.

Marle Curle, a junior forward, was the leading scorer for Plattsburgh High with seven goals and four assists. A dynamic forward, Curle has speed and the ability to create her own space.

Ellen Thew, Saranac's lone First-Team selection, had a stellar year and she was just a freshman. Thew, a forward, set the single-season scoring record for the Saranac girls' soccer program midway through the year. She finished with 24 goals and five assists.

Fast, aggressive, skilled and determined, Thew showed the ability to beat defenders one-on-one and had an obvious knack for scoring.

Thew helped Saranac finish the season 10-6-1.

Mallory Honan, a Northeastern Clinton junior, also made the First Team.

The four-year varsity player and team captain displayed excellent speed, a hard shot and excellent accuracy that made her a scoring threat at forward. She capitalizes on nearly every opportunity presented to her and finished the season as the team scoring leader with 13 goals and two assists.

Ashley Carpenter represented Peru on the First Team. The sophomore forward and third-year varsity starter helped the Indians to 7-8-1 and an appearance in the Class B semifinals.

Carpenter, who also played midfield, showed the ability to see the entire field. She controlled play and was deft at finding open players.

She has great soccer knowledge and used her speed and skill to find open space. She tallied nine goals and six assists this season.

BOYS

The Cougars had three First-Team picks — senior Matt Letourneau and juniors Kyle McCarthy and Josh Rabideau.

Letourneau, a defenseman, was a two-year starter and team captain. A solid defender with his determination and hustle at the fullback position, he made it dififuclt for opposing offenses to attack the NCCS defense. Letourneau, who had seven assists, was also an offensive threat with his long throws into the box.

Rabideau, the Cougars' starting goalkeeper, was a two-year starter. An athletic player, Rabideau showed the ability to turn away the most difficult shots. He played a major role in the way the defense has played the last two years. He allowed just seven goals all season while tallying 10 shutouts and 53 saves.

McCarthy, a junior, transferred from Chazy and became the Cougars' top offensive threat. He led the team in scoring and assists, recording 17 goals and seven assists. McCarthy has displayed great instincts, always knowing where the ball is and being in the right place at the right time.

Plattsburgh High, which didn't have a loss until the Class B title game, also had three players selected.

Ethan Votraw, a senior midfielder, was a four-year varsity player. He was a dominant midfielder with tremendous foot skills and good leadership qualities. He led Division I in scoring with 16 goals and seven assists. Votraw displayed the ability to finish with both his head and his feet. He was a CVAC First-Team pick last year and All-CVAC.

Rob Fout, a senior midfielder, was a two-year varsity member. He teamed with Votraw the past two years to help control midfield play. An accurate passer who also has a soft touch, he used his height to his advantage defensively and offensively. He finished the season with five goals and two assists.

David Carpenter, a senior forward, was a two-year varsity member and one of the fastest forwards in the league. An offensive-minded player, Carpenter looked to constantly pressure opposing defenses. He showed good breakaway speed with the ability to finish and was a hard worker up top. He had 15 goals and four assists this season.

Billy Badger, Saranac's starting goalkeeper, was one of the top netminders in the league. The senior faced a barrage of shots but kept Saranac afloat in most games. He finished the season with 169 saves and four shutouts.

The Beekmantown Eagles won the Section VII Class B title and had two players who were selected to the first team — senior Keon Jahanbakhsh and junior Zach Brockway.

Jahanbakhsh, a defenseman, was a senior captain and five-year starter. He was the defensive leader and his decision-making on the field was one of the key's to the team's sectional championship. As a sweeper, Jahanbakhsh positioned himself well and was able to anticipate other teams' offensive attacks. He used his speed to reach loose balls in the box during critical moments of several games. He was an All-CVAC pick at midfield last year.

Brockway, a midfielder, finished his second season as a starter. He was an asset wherever Beekmantown needed him on the field, spending time at forward, midfield and defense. His team-first attitude and unmatched desire to win allowed him to grow into a leader that his teammates were willing to follow.

Peru finished the season 8-8-1, advancing to the Class B semifinals. The Indians had two selections — sophomore Ian Spear and senior Travis Turgeon.

Spear, a forward, was Peru's main offensive threat who put consistent pressure on opposing defenses. He led the team in scoring with 13 goals and four assists.

Turgeon, a defenseman, was the team leader and backstop of the Indians' defense. He also tallied one goal on the season.
