Rain stalls tennis championships

PLATTSBURGH — Rain interrupted the Section VII tennis meet before champions could be crowned Saturday.

Several quarterfinal matches will resume at 9 a.m. today at Plattsburgh High, with the semifinals set to start at 11 a.m.

The boys' winners advance to next weekend's NYSPHSAA Boys Tennis Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. The girls' state championships are held in the fall.

In girls' singles, Saranac's Rachel Leitsch and Northeastern Clinton's Alanna Cruz have already earned spots in the semifinals.

After a first-round bye, Leitsch beat Serena Foster of Northeastern Clinton before defeating teammate Kalee Smith, 7-5, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Cruz didn't lose a point in matches against Anna Dorrance (Saranac) and Krysten Koktowski (Beekmantown).

The No. 1 seed, Stephanie Omlin of Peru, was playing a quarterfinal match against teammate Stephanie Demarais when the rain hit, and Beekmantown's Emily Carlin, the No. 2 seed, was playing Plattsburgh's Marle Curle.

The top-seeded doubles team of Kristen Langr and Paige Southwick from Northeastern Clinton was the only one to finish its quarterfinal match, beating Seton Catholic's Kerry Cannon and Megan Tedford, 6-2, 6-2.

Quarterfinals to be finished today are: Alexandra Provost and Bailey Waterbury (Beekmantown) against Katie Lawliss and Margaret Mitchell (Peru), Hannah Klooster and Megan Harris (Saranac) versus Samantha Banker and Abby Higgins (Peru) and Katelynn King and Tessa King (Northern Adirondack) against Georgie Knox and Natalia Smith (Lake Placid).

Beekmantown's Mark Price, the No. 1 seed, reached the boys' singles semis by getting past Saranac's Luke Simpson before beating Peru's Adam Blaine, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters.

The matches still to be finished are: Seton Catholic's Jang Bin Park against Saranac's Dylan Christopherson, Eric Mitchell (Beekmantown) against Ryan Marks (Northeastern Clinton) and Alex Jennett against No. 2 seed Adam Emery, both of Plattsburgh.

Northeastern Clinton's Bobby Marks and Richie Collins won their doubles quarterfinal over fellow Cougars Alex Guay and Adam Khater 6-3, 6-1. Marks and Collins will face Saranac's Shawn Bissonette and Corey Bissonette, who eliminated Beekmantown's Spencer Keable and Will Breyette 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

The match of top-seeded Shea Crockett and Danny O'Halloran (Plattsburgh) against Patrick Daly and Keegan Parrotte (Peru) was suspended, as was Dolan Riley and Nick Hanson (Lake Placid) versus Charles Payson and Dylan Riley (Beekmantown).
