GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ashley Leta's first competitive mile wasn't in a preseason meet, an invitational meet or even a section meet for that matter.
The Peru freshman got her first crack at a 1,500 -meter run on the biggest stage of all, the New Balance Outdoor Nationals track and field meet.
Leta placed eighth overall in the girls' freshman mile with a time of 5 minutes, 22.36 seconds Friday despite the 90-degree heat at North Carolina A&T University. She finished just 36 hundredths of a second behind Jacquelin Katzman of Albequrque N.M. and placed fourth in her heat. Kennedy Weisner of Saint Marys, Penn. took the top spot in a time of 5:06:97.
Leta participated in the 3,200 meter relay at the NYSPHSAA championship meet rather than the 1,500-meter run.
