PLATTSBURGH — After one day on Lake Champlain, Jamie Hartman returned to shore with a livewell that was 20 pounds heavier and a heavier wallet to boot.
Hartman took the top spot in the Walmart Bass Fishing League Lake Champlain Tournament Saturday after reeling in five bass totalling 20 pounds, 3 ounces overall.
He finished more than one pound ahead of the second-place angler, Michael Donahue.
Hartman, who's from Newport, took home $6,514 after Ranger Cup and Evinrude bonuses were tacked onto his weigh-in earnings.
Donahue, a Fulton native, weighed in at an even 19 pounds, and Henry Fristik of Chester, Mass. took third place with a total weight of 18 pounds, 4 ounces. Both men earned more than $1,000 for their catches.
Rob Lamoy of Chazy was the top local angler Saturday, bringing in 14 pounds, 6 ounces. He finished in 20th place, 5 ounces and two spots away from a money position. Ryan Latinville of Plattsburgh followed with a 23rd- place weight of 14 pounds. John Hynes (11 pounds, 12 ounces) and Nicholas Walker (11 pounds, 4 ounces), both of Plattsburgh, also cracked the top 50.
Saturday's tournament was the first of a five-stop tour in the BFL's Northeast Division.
