NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals have enjoyed strong second periods this season.

Until Tuesday night.

Norwich University erased a 1-0 deficit with three second-period goals and skated to a solid 4-1 non-conference win at Kreitzberg Arena.

Freshman Kyle Thomas scored three goals and assisted on a fourth as the unbeaten Cadets improved to 9-0-2 on the season. The Cardinals, meanwhile, slipped to 9-2-2.

"It's disappointing because I can't stand to lose when guys don't get bodies and pucks to the net," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We didn't do that tonight.

"It's also a combination of some older guys who haven't played well — on defense and at forward. Especially against the good teams. Some of those guys didn't even play well this past weekend when we won two games."

The Cardinals, following a scoreless first period, took the lead on Dan Sliasis' power-play goal from in close at 7:58 of the second stanza.

The lead, however, didn't last long.

Thomas tallied a power-play goal at 8:26 and then gave the Cadets the lead for good at 10:58.

Thomas then assisted on Tory Allen's marker at 13:44 that gave Norwich a two-goal advantage.

"We didn't play well at all in the second period," Emery said. "We can't play catch-up on the road like that."

The Cardinals, who played a solid third period in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Norwich, couldn't come up with that same kind of effort Tuesday.

The only goal of the third came when Thomas completed his three-goal performance at 15:01.

"Norwich did a good job, especially with the 3-1 lead," Emery said. "They did a good job taking time off the clock.

"We learned more about our team tonight."

Norwich finished with a 28-16 shot advantage, including a 14-5 edge in the second period.

Ryan Klingensmith made 15 saves for the Cadets and Ryan Williams 24 for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State heads back on the road this weekend for a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Elmira College on Saturday.
