PLATTSBURGH — Trinity College's goaltenders were under siege Saturday night.

The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team took 70 shots on goal, including an incredible 36 in the second period alone, and rolled to a 9-0 victory in the championship of the Cardinal Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The Cardinals (9-1-2) peppered Trinity starting goalie Wesley Vesprini with 57 shots over the first two periods. Vesprini played very well, despite giving up seven goals.

"We did a good job early getting the puck in deep and getting our cycle going," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We focused on getting pucks on the net and played our style of hockey."

The Bantams (5-3-1) became frustrated and spent a lot of time in the penalty box. The Cardinals went five-of-11 on the powerplay, including three goals while skating two men up, and also had a short-handed goal.

"When you possess the puck as much as we did tonight, the other team is going to take penalties," Emery said.

"I was pleased our discipline was good. We didn't retaliate."

Tom Breslin and Kyle Taylor scored first-period goals for the Cardinals, who held a 21-8 shot advantage in the stanza.

Plattsburgh State then broke it open with five goals in the second when Mike Grace, Andrew Willock, Eric Satim, Phil Farrow and Chris Wieland all tallied.

Dan Sliasis and Cody Adams finished off the scoring in the third off Trinity back-up netminder Joseph Hanson.

"The line of Jared Docking, Kyle Taylor and Kyle Kudroch played with a lot of emotion and set the tone for the weekend," Emery said.

Josh Leis played a strong game in the Plattsburgh State nets, recording the shutout with 23 saves.

"You're always looking to correct mistakes and we had some letdowns mentally tonight," Emery said. "Trinity had some Grade A scoring chances. They had eight shots on goal in the first period and four came on two-on-ones.

"We can't afford to do that against Norwich or the puck will be in the back of the net."

The Cardinals play at Norwich University on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Potsdam stunned the Cadets in a shootout Saturday night in the championship of Norwich's Times-Argus Tournament. The Bears rallied from two goals down late in the contest to tie it, at 4-all, and then went to the sixth shooter before winning the title in a shootout.

Plattsburgh State defenseman Ryan Corry was chosen as the Cardinal Classic's Most Valuable Player. The all-tournament team consisted of Corry, Kudroch, Farrow and Leis from Plattsburgh State, and forward Egor Petrov and defenseman Regnars Alksnis from Trinity.

Kirk Bolduc scored just 22 seconds into the game and the Spartans, bouncing back from Friday's loss to Plattsburgh State, were on their way to a win.

Ben Schoeneberger tallied later in the first period to make it 2-0. Justin Alonzo's power-play goal and Stuart Stefan's even-strength marker gave Castleton (2-6-2) a 4-0 advantage after two.

Stefan added another goal in the third and Brett Zeggil a short-handed marker to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead, before Skidmore's Nick Dupuis scored with the Thoroughbreds (4-6) on a two-man advantage with just one minute left in the contest.

Castleton held a 32-21 shot advantage, with Arthur Hollinger turning away 20 of 21 shots in net for the Spartans.
