PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team came ready to play Friday night.
And, the Cardinals kept that energy the entire game.
Eric Satim and Ian DeLong tallied two goals each and Plattsburgh State opened its second semester with an 8-1 victory over Castleton State in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic at the Stafford Ice Arena.
"We had good leadership and intensity from the start," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "The players were hungry."
The win sends the Cardinals (8-1-2) into tonight's 7 p.m. championship game against Trinity College, which skated to a 7-2 win over Skidmore College in the first game.
Skidmore and Castleton will play in the 4 p.m. third-place contest.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the first period when Chris Wieland stuffed the puck into the net just 54 seconds into the contest and Kyle Kudroch on a rebound at 7:00.
Plattsburgh State did have to kill off a five-minute major for hitting from behind for the final 1:34 of the first period and the first 3:26 of the second.
The Cardinals then added to their lead on goals by Vick Schlueter at 4:00 and Eric Satim at 5:33 of the second for a 4-0 advantage.
Ben Schoeneberger went up top at 17:31 to beat Plattsburgh State goalie Ryan Williams to put the Spartans (1-6-2) on the board and cut their deficit to 4-1.
That would, however, be the only highlight for the Spartans.
"I felt our second period was again our best," Emery said. "We could have had more goals if we would have taken advantage of the opportunities we had."
The third period was all Plattsburgh State as the Cardinals got two goals from DeLong and one apiece from Dan Sliasis and Satim to break it open.
"We wanted to keep the clock running in the third period," Emery said.
Plattsburgh State was strong on special teams, going four-for-nine on the powerplay.
"We did a good job getting the puck in deep, working our cycle and forcing them into taking penalties," Emery said.
The Cardinals held a 32-18 shot advantage, with Williams turning away 17 of 18 shots.
"He made the saves when he had to," Emery said. "Their only goal came on a good shot."

Adam Houli's power-play goal at 12:56 of the second period snapped a 2-all tie and Trinity (Conn.) then scored four goals in the third period to break it open.
Chris Menard, Matthew Quigely, Jordan So, Stephen Rogers, Zachary Lombardi and Regnars Alksnis also scored for the Bantams (5-2-1), who held a 4-2 advantage before scoring three goals within a 1:52 span late in the third.
Wesley Vesprini turned aside 30 of 32 shots in net for the victory.
"We're going to have our hands full with Trinity," Emery said. "They looked good."
Chris Webb and Zach Menard tallied the lone goals for the Thoroughbreds (4-5). Menard's goal came at 11:00 of the second period and tied the contest, at 2-all, at the time.
