PLATTSBURGH — Beekmantown overcame a two-point halftime deficit by outscoring Malone 38-24 in the second stanza at the Larry Cowan Section VII/X Challenge Wednesday at Plattsburgh State.

The Eagles won, 71-59, going 10-for-16 from the free-throw line in the second half. Malo Valerien made a big impact at the charity stripe throughout the game, going 11-for-13.

"I think we buckled down a little bit defensively in the second half," Beekmantown coach Ryan Converse said. "We did a much better job defensively, and really we just played very unselfishly in the second half. We moved ball well, made the extra pass.

"There were a lot of fouls called, and we shot the ball from free throw line very well."

Valerien and Devon Anderson led Beekmantown with 19 points apiece.

Anderson also added 10 rebounds, and Valerien grabbed 10 boards.

Thomas Ryan picked up 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

"We finally played a complete game," Converse said. "We were right there in the first half, we just had a couple bad bounces. But we kept our composure."

Jared Heden was Malone's leading scorer with 16 points. Jake Gravel added 10 for Malone.

"We went away from what we were successful with in the first half, which was crashing the boards and transition. Our guys just didn't step up. We've got to take more pride in our defense."
