CLINTONVILLE — Northeastern Clinton and AuSable Valley, two teams looking to make a statement this winter, collided for the first time this season Tuesday with the visiting Cougars prevailing 3-2 in a 2½-hour classic confrontation.
Northeastern Clinton won 18-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 25-15 to rebound from its first loss and improve to 4-1 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference volleyball. The loss snapped AuSable Valley's three-match winning streak, dropping the Patriots to 3-2.
"We always seem to match up really well with NCCS," AuSable Valley Coach Sandy Hoey said. "Even though we lost, it was a great volleyball match with a lot of strong volleys.
"NCCS is really scrappy and a good defensive team. Tonight, they really had energy and the momentum. They didn't let many balls hit the floor."
Ayisha Loya, Alyssa Rabideau, Ashley Goyette and Mallory Honan led the defensive effort with 23 kills and 20 digs among them. Loya also had a strong serving game with five aces.
Alex Hoey was strong defensively (12 kills, 30 digs) and offensively (12 aces) for the Patriots. Emily Miller also was strong at the net with 12 kills and two blocks while Shiloh Bourgeois chipped in with eight kills and 17 digs. Karissa Fuller also had a great match for the Patriots.

ELLENBURG — Sam Banker had 11 points and 10 assists as Peru won the last two games to rally past Northern Adirondack 3-2 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday.
After dropping the first and third games, the Indians won 26-24 and 25-16 to secure the match victory.
Amanda Way had nine points, seven digs and six kills for Peru, while Abby higgins added eight points, seven digs and six kills. Chelsea Johnston served 12 points, Jen Beauter had 10, and Breanna Martineau added 10 digs.
Emily Garrand had 16 points, five aces and seven digs for the Bobcats. Kara Perry served 10 points, including seven aces, and Sara Williams added seven points and five digs.
