10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Allison Dowdle comes up with 21 kills and 5 blocks in Plattsburgh's 3-1 volleyball win over NAC.
Faith Bedore scores 25 points and Faith Mercurio adds 2 field goals in overtime, giving Tupper Lake a 45-39 win over Beekmantown. Erika Covey leads the Eagles with 17 points.
Travis Sheehan scores 22 points as Willsboro beats host Chazy 81-59 in the tourney final. Mike Barcomb leads Chazy with 18.
Cornell senior Seth Charles is ranked fifth among heavyweights in NCAA Div. I wrestling.
Trevor Waite scores with 28 seconds left to lift Plattsburgh High into a 3-3 tie with Seton Catholic. The Knights' Joel Siskavich and Plattsburgh's Jon Malcolm each record 23 saves.
Amber Goppert scores 26 points as Malone holds on to beat NCCS 55-46 for its third straight Orange Classic title and seventh in eight years. Amanda Clark scores 23 for the Cougars.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
MVP Julie Moore scores 28 points and Sherry White adds 19 to lead Westport to an 81-59 win over Moriah in the E'town-Lewis tourney final. Kristie Sprague leads Moriah with 24.
MVP Mike Martin collects 17 points, 11 assists and 10 steals to lead Chateaugay over Northern Adirondack 68-58 in the Chateaugay Rotary final. Jon Rushford has 24 points for NAC.
Cy Ellsworth scores 4 goals in Saranac Lake's 8-2 win over South Glens Falls.
Jeremy Dubay fires in 33 points and pulls down11 rebounds as Seton Catholic tops PHS 69-62 in the Al Zaferakis tourney final. Mike Bedworth chips in with 16 while Scott Miller leads the Hornets with 13. Lisa Zaferakis tallies 20 points to lead PHS to a 43-39 win over Malone in the girls' final. Margaret Gwinn scores 17 for the Huskies.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Clinton Community College's Jeff McCasland, second in rebounding with a 16.5 average, and North Country CC's Eric Lemza, 10th in field-goal percentage with a 59% standard, earn NJCAA basketball recognition for the week.
MVP Terri-Jo Cornwright scores 28 points to lead Elizabethtown-Lewis past AuSable Valley 64-30 in the final of the Lions' basketball tournament. Pat Parrow scores 16 to spur AuSable Valley to a 60-47 triumph over Saranac in the E'town-Lewis boys' final.
Jason Striebel's 12-footer with 7 seconds to play gives Moriah a 52-51 win over host Crown Point in the tourney final.
Jack Hills' defensive play sparks Ticonderoga to a 51-46 win over Warrensburg in the Div. II final of the Glens Falls basketball tournament. Craig Sanders leads the Sentinels with 15 points while Albert Thompson comes up with some clutch rebounds late in the game.
Roy Maskell scores 11 points and grabs 13 rebounds as Northeastern Clinton tops Westport 58-50 in the NCCS tourney final. Tom Gates nets 21 for the Eagles.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
John Thompson nets 27 points as MAI rallies from an 11-point halftime deficit to knock off previously unbeaten AuSable Valley 59-52.
Jim Bushey scores 3 goals to lead Northern Adirondack over the Lake Placid B team 11-1 in hockey.
Beth Pearl earns Alfred Tech Athlete of the Month after setting 3 school records in swimming.
Julie Roach claims 4 firsts for the Northern Pikes Swim Club in the Johnstown meet.
Steve Rolich and Jimmy Guay score in the last 28 seconds of play to rally St. John's past Alexander Gault High School 5-4.
Albert Lavigne beats Dana Dobson 10-4 to earn Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the Alumni Wrestling Tournament. It was a match of former state runners-up.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Tammy and Mary Joyce Brewer, bowling at Plattsburgh Lanes, win the Midget Division of the Mother-Daughter Family Twosome Mail-o-graphic bowling tournament.
John Mosher scores 23 points, Jack Hartpence hits for 13 and Tommy Clark chips in with 11 as Plattsburgh State defeats Brooklyn College 73-64.
Tom Ducatte scores 17 points as PHS downs Peru 65-52, giving Ray Holmes his first victory over the Indians.
Rocky Giroux scores 5 goals and Rod Smith adds 4 as Giroux's bombs Lyon Mountain 14-3 in North Country Hockey League play. Gary Ryan scores twice for Lyon Mountain.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Ken Hawksby scores 17 points to spark Champlain to a 57-50 victory over Mooers. Jim Kennedy leads Mooers with 14.
Tom McFadden scores 25 points as St. John's snaps Plattsburgh High's 25-game winning streak with a 79-62 triumph.
Gary Ensign and Pat Sullivan each score 12 points in Keeseville's 52-41 win over Lake Placid. Mike Bickford leads the Blue Bombers with 14.
21 speed-skating clubs compete in the first meet held in Plattsburgh since pre-World War II days. Jeff Burns takes second in Novice Boys while Saranac Lake's George Wilson is third in senior men's and teammate Jeanne Bruso, first in juvenile girls.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Jim Sears scored 17 points, Urgil Votraw adds 15 and Dick Smith, 10, as the unbeaten Irish of St. John's defeat St. Mary's of Ogdensburg 58-40.
Bechard and Cross each tally 13 points to lead Champlain past Rouses Point. LaBounty scores 11 in a losing cause.
Monty scores 14 points to spark Altona to a 40-36 victory over Chateaugay. Dupree nets 14 for Chateaugay.
Rod LaValley scores 21 points to pace Diamond Match to a 73-35 victory over Willsboro. Shedd scores 12 for Willsboro.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Lyon Mountain's Bob Linney, holder of the North American 4-man bobsled record, retires and a half hour later, his brother Bill pilots the Iron Shoes sled to a new track record from the half mile of 39.60 seconds. Gene Welch, Jerry Blanch and Rufus Brickey, all of Lyon Mountain, round out Bill's team.
McDermott scores 11 points to lead MAI to a 28-15 win over St. John's. Favero nets 6 for the Irish.
