MASSENA — Kevin Kurz's goal at 6:04 of the third period snapped a 1-all tie and gave the Chiefs a 2-1 victory in the consolation game of the Massena Hockey Tournament Saturday.
It was the first win of the season for Saranac (1-4 overall).
Ben Polhemus put the Chiefs ahead at 7:43 of the first period when he knocked in a rebound from in front. Kevin Kurz and Jake Martindale got the assists.
Clarkstown North, however, tied it shortly after, at 9:29, when Sam Fratello tallied a short-handed goal when he picked off a pass at the blue line and went in on a breakaway.
Alex Sarazen and Steve Miller assisted on Kurz's game-winning goal. Sarazen took a shot from the side wall and Kurz, who was coming in through the slot, deflected it into the net.
Dustin Plumadore posted 24 saves in net for the Chiefs, who were outshot by a 25-17 margin.
"I'm very, very proud of the kids," said Saranac coach Trevor Cameron. "We've worked hard to execute our systems and we've done a good job so early in the season.
"Some of the kids stepped up today because of injuries. Dustin has a terrific game in goal and made some big saves. Defenseman Matt Drollette was chosen to the all-tournament team."
