Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Chris Trombley, Brad Malark, Brad Trombly, Steve Marsh, Dana Poirier and Cory Pike all finish 5-0 for the day, leading Northern Adirondack to the team title in the Goshen Early Bird Wrestling Tournament.

Mark Favro picks up 4 points to pass Matt Meyers as Plattsburgh High's all-time leader in points with 125 for hockey.

Peru quarterback Chris Trombley is one of 28 named to the New York State Scholar All-State Football Team.

Connecticut-bound Morgan Valley scores 27 points as Vermont power Rice Memorial defeats Northeastern Clinton 92-39 in girls' basketball. Debbie Trombly leads the Cougars with 12.

Josh Brooks scores 8 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as Saranac stuns PHS 45-43. Joel Butchino nets 21 for the Hornets.

Adam VanNortwick achieves All-America status in cross country with a 12th-place finish at the AAU Junior Olympics.

20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Jerry Kowalowski, who scored 23 goals for Clinton CC, is named to the NJCAA All-Region III in men's soccer.

Becca Robinson's basket in the second overtime gives Schroon Lake a 59-58 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis. Kim Beck leads the Wildcats with 27 points while Lori Gero has 10 steals. Chrissy Pulsifer nets 24 for the Lions.

Andy Hollinshead fires in 31 points and Mike Smith dishes out a school-record 16 assists in Chateaugay's win over St. Regis Falls.

Tracy Clarke and Kristy Sprague combine for 33 points as Moriah spoils Tupper Lake's CVAC debut in girls' basketball with a 37-34 win. Rose Shaheen leads Tupper with 12 points.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Tim McNierney scores 4 goals in Lake Placid's 7-3 hockey win over PHS.

Matt Perrin and Tim Morgan score in the shootout to give Malone a 5-4 win over Northeastern Clinton. Mike Duffy scores for the Cougars in the shootout.

Chris Delair's 2 free throws in overtime lift Tupper Lake to a 55-54 victory over PHS. Tim Denis leads the Lumberjacks with 14 while Harry Reed scores 15 for the Hornets.

Sharon Furnia serves 13 points with 7 aces and Peggy Corrigan chips in with 10 points and 8 kills as Peru sweeps past previously unbeaten NAC in volleyball.

Chris Buckland's two points in overtime give Crown Point a 57-56 win over Willsboro, overcoming a 23-point effort by Brian Gough.

David Parker, Tony Montemorra and Shane Phillips win their matches in the upper weights to send Peru on to a 34-30 wrestling win over NAC.

30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Don Schryer scores 29 points to lead Crown Point to a 67-62 win over Willsboro. John Marcotte tallies 22 for the Warriors.

Rich Reynolds rips the nets for 32 as AuSable Valley beats Rice Memorial in overtime, 65-63. Guy Garrow scores 24 to lead PHS over Essex Junction.

The Fearsome Five of Peru — Mike Derrick, Brent Banker, Kevin Kemp, Mike Esposito and Dave Champagne III — win the 62-mile Olympic Torch Relay Race from Fort Ticonderoga to Lake Placid.

Phil Collett and Dan Melie score third-period goals as Peru beats the Lake Placid B 4-3 for its first win ever in hockey. The Indians were 0-16 the year before.



40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Champlain College's Dick Van Hoesen, who gave up only nine goals in 10 games, is named the top goalkeeper in junior college soccer.

Bob Watson scores 22 points, Larry Carpenter, 15, and Tim McDonough, 15, to lead St. John's to an 83-53 win over MAI. Mark Benoit nets 14 for the Mounties.

Jim Haley hits for 25 in Dannemora's 77-53 win over St. Joseph's. Mularney has 21 for the Purple Tide.

Paul Harrica is named MVP of the Ithaca College freshman soccer team while teammates Don Moulton and Dick Zerrahn earn numerals.

Bob Meconi burns the nets for 46 points in an 84-77 win over St. John's.

Ray Rock's 7-6 decision of Jim LaBarre at 137 pounds sends Saranac on to a 31-19 win over MAI in wrestling.

50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Fuzzy Fesette scores 34 points in Plattsburgh State's 77-66 victory over Potsdam State.

Lionel Miller nets 21 to lead Mooers over Ellenburg 50-48. Leon Bilow scores 18 for Ellenburg.

Tony Buffa scores 17 points and Gary Lucas, 14, as MAI thumps Beekmantown 65-40. Don Corron leads the Eagles with 12.

Westport edges Crown Point 63-61 in double overtime to extend its basketball winning streak to 29 games. David Volckmann scores 19 points, including the game-winning basket, for the Eagles while David Lang nets 19 for the Panthers.

George Barnett scores 12 points to pace Peru to a 49-41 win over Port Henry. Jim Murdock leads the Porters with 16.

60 YEARS AGO (1949)
John Podres scores 31 points and Mike Kukie, 12, to lead Mineville over MAI 61-40. Les Fessette leads the Mount with 16.

Hugh O'Brien sinks 2 free throws in overtime and George Kurz chips in with 28 to give AuSable Forks a 56-54 win over PHS.

New basketball officials are introduced: Adrian Wood and Bernard Riley of Chazy, Francis Golden and Lawrence Infante, Jr. of Plattsburgh, Gustave Perna and Sam Santangelo of Champlain College, Donald Curtin and James Fritz of Ellenburg, Walter Vanderhoof of Port Henry, and James Brannigan of Mineville.

Dick Cheverette scores 24 points to spur Peru to a 55-32 win over St. Mary's of Champlain. Fournier nets 13 for St. Mary's.

Rod Willette scores 20 points and Dick Bodette, 14, in Champlain's 65-32 win over Dannemora.

70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Ed Card scores 8 points to lead Westport past PHS 26-22. Fred Phifer leads the Orange & Black with eight points.

Archie Tolosky tosses in 9 points while Marlowe and Begor add 8 apiece to spark Lyon Mountain to a 34-15 win over Altona. Wright scores 7 for Altona.

Sweet nets 11 and Gagnon, 10, to lead Rouses Point over Ellenburg 26-21. Blow scores 15 in a losing cause.
