Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Peru 2nd in Kingston Duals

Indian River takes first in Saranac wrestling tournament



KINGSTON — It was a big week for the Peru wrestling team.

The Indians, coming off a victory over rival Beekmantown to open the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season on Wednesday, compiled an 8-1 record Saturday and Sunday to take second place in the Kingston Duals.

"The kids wrestled extremely well," said Peru co-head coach Gary Edwards. "They wrestled hard — in a tournament like this you get beat up pretty good.

"We wrestled five teams on Saturday and four on Sunday. All these teams are unknown to us because we don't see them."

Four Peru matmen went unbeaten during the two days — Jacob Goddeau 9-0 at 103 pounds, Arik Robinson 9-0 at 112, Patrick Hogan 9-0 at 130 and Cameron Mello 7-0 at 285.

Goddeau pinned eight opponents and won one match by forfeit, Robinson six matches by pin and three by forfeit, Hogan three matches by pin, three by decision and three by forfeit, and Mello three by pin, one by decision and two by forfeit.

Kyler Agoney finished 6-1 at 96 with three pins, a decision and two forfeit, Noah Phillips 8-1 at 125 with four pins, two decisions and two forfeits. Alex Pugh 7-1 at 119 with four pins, a decision and two forfeits and Troy Seymour 8-1 at 135 with four pins, two decisions and two forfeits.

Adam Stickle posted a 6-2 record at 145, Jacob Bell went 6-3 at 140 and Brandon Moore 6-3 at 160.

Peru wins were over East Ramapo (73-12), Kingston (57-26), North Rockland (38-30), Wallkill (51-31), Red Hook (52-27), Middletown (50-24), Edgemont (51-20) and Highland (66-15).

The only loss for the Indians was a 39-30 decision to Valley Central, which won the tournament.

Agoney, Goddeau, Robinson, Pugh, Phillips, Hogan and Mello won Peru matches against Valley Central.

"It was a close match," said Peru co-head coach Mike Hogan. "The kids were terrific all weekend."

Indian River wins
SARANAC — Indian River crowned five individual champions Saturday while finishing in first place in the Saranac Early Bird Wrestling Tournament.

Indian River ended up with 228.5 points, followed in the 12-team field by Noble, Me. in second place with 198 and Holland Patent in third with 156.

Host Saranac was sixth with 78 and Malone's Franklin Academy 10th with 38.

"Indian River and Noble were tied going into the final round, but Indian River won five of the finals," said Saranac coach Heath Smith.

"We had 12 teams this year, including new teams in the tournament in Holland Patent, Beaver River and Dolgeville. That gave the tournament even more talent and made it more exciting."

Ryan Guynup, wrestling at 135, was the lone winner for the Chiefs when he recorded a 6-3 decision over Noble's Jake Bagley in the title match.

Guynup was chosen as the Outstanding Wrestler in the lightweights and Clifton-Fine's John Eibert, at 189, the Outstanding Wrestler in the heavyweights.

"Ryan beat a three-time Maine state champion in the finals and wrestled really well all day," Smith said.

"Eibert, who is now a two-time winner here, pinned all three of his opponents on the day.

"It was an early tournament for us and some of our wrestlers won their first-career varsity matches. But, we still have some things to work on."

Other Saranac place-winners included Cody Gillette in fourth place at 96, Ben Perry fourth at 189, Cody McCasland fourth at 215 and Brett Kiroy fourth at 285.

Bobcats take third
BALLSTON SPA — The Northern Adirondack wrestling team turned in a solid third-place finish on Saturday at the Ballston Spa Duals.

The Bobcats recorded wins over Albany High (57-18), Scotia-Glenville (42-37), Corinth (42-36) and Niskayuna (51-31) and fell to tournament champion Colonie (61-18) to go 4-1 in the event.

Three NAC wrestlers compiled 5-0 records — Jason Filion at 145, Andrew Manor at 152 and Mike Riley at 215.

Four others went 4-1 and they included Scott Kellett (96), Justin Kellett (112), Kyle Patnode (119) and Kyle Demarais (171).

Matt Lashway (160) ended up with a 3-2 record.

"We had three real good matches against Scotia-Glenville, Corinth and Niskayuna and that was good experience for us," said NAC coach Jared Peryea. "We have a lot of wrestlers back from last year, but we're still pretty young.

"Our wrestlers who went 5-0 and 4-1 wrestled extremely well. And, Lashway is only an eighth-grader and you don't see that very often. So, I was pretty happy."

Patriots eighth
ROTTERDAM — The AuSable Valley wrestling team placed eighth on Saturday in the Mohonasen Tournament.

There were 15 weight classes and the Patriots had only eight wrestlers competing.

AuSable Valley had two matmen who took second place — John Dukett at 171 pounds and Brandon Woodring at 189.

David Thompson finished third at 285 for the Patriots.
