Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Saranac Lake, B'town win in hockey



SARANAC LAKE — The Red Storm bounced back from an early 1-goal deficit with a score of their own in each period, capturing a 3-1 victory over Burnt Hills in the Saranac Lake Invitational Tournament Friday night.

Saranac Lake's Brandon Patraw negated Frankie Emmer's go-ahead goal at 9:29 in the first period.

Kyle Dora and Logan McDougal then netted Saranac Lake scores in the second and third periods, respectively.

The Red Storm outshot Burnt Hills by a 35-10 margin.

"We controlled the play," Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth said. "Most of the action was in their defensive zone."

Drew Tedford, Nick Magro and Devin Darrah tallied assists for the Red Storm in the game.

Burnt Hills goaltender Ian Koupash stayed busy in net, making 32 saves.

"We had a lot of scoring chances tonight," Ellsworth said. "Koupash made some really nice saves to keep them in it.

"I was very pleased with our guys. I thought they put in a solid effort."

Saranac Lake will play Niskayuna-Schenectady in the tournament championship game today at 2 p.m.

SARANAC LAKE — Sam Hartz scored two goals, including a short-handed marker in the second period, to help lead Niskayuna-Schenectady past the Chiefs.

Sean Haley also scored for the Mohawks, who broke a 1-all tie with two goals in the second stanza.

Haley put Niskayuna-Schenectady ahead to stay at 3:42 of the second and Hartz made it 3-1 with his short-handed goal at 5:14.

Matt Drollette scored a power-play goal in the first period for Saranac (0-2) and Kevin Kurz tallied in the third. Joey Bridgeman picked up two assists.

"The kids played hard," Saranac coach Trevor Cameron said. "They battled back. I felt we had the momentum in the third, but we took a selfish penalty late in the period."

Missisquoi Valley Tournament

HIGHGATE CENTER, Vt. — Kyle Mathieu recorded a hat trick and Cole Carter got his first varsity goal as the Eagles posted a win in the opening round of the Missisquoi Valley Union Tournament.

Matt Durocher, Austin Bradish, Frank Buksa and Tavon Ford-Relation also tallied for Beekmantown, which broke the game open in the third period.

The Eagles held a 3-2 lead after one and a 5-4 advantage after two before scoring three unanswered goals in the third.

Brandon Foster made 19 saves in the Beekmantown nets.

"I was pleased with our offensive production," said Beekmantown coach Justin Frechette. "We got good senior leadership and we went three-for-three on the powerplay.

"Freshman defenseman Brett Giroux broke up a three-on-one break when we were ahead, 5-4, and that was a key play in the game. We still have a lot to work on, but it's good to get a win in our first game."

Dustin Cummings tallied two goals for Milton, while Dustin Paquette and Jackson Hickey added one apiece.

The Eagles play Missisquoi Valley Union today at 4 p.m.

Caleb Lophian tallied four assists for Missisquoi and teammate Kyle Kilbury scored once and assisted on another.

Northeastern Clinton's Ben Leduc scored twice in the first period and got a helper on a Bobby Marks goal in the third. Marks also netted a Cougar score in the second.

Missisquoi held a 1-goal advantage after the first period before Marks knotted the game at 3-3 early in the second.

However, Dylan Lophian regained Missisquoi's lead later in the stanza, and his team scored two more times in the third.

"It was hard to really gauge the game because there were so many penalties," NCCS coach Rob Francis said. "It was hard for either team to get into a flow."

Jake Pratt scored in the third period for Missisquoi, which tallied 32 shots on net in the game.

NCCS's Dylan Carter had two assists. Cougar goaltender Chad Piche made 26 saves.

Kenneth Spears and Jonathan Case also scored for Missisquoi.

NCCS is slated to face Milton today.

ALEXANDRIA BAY — Josh Slocum and Justin Ward scored two goals each to help lead Alexandria Bay past the Huskies in Northern Athletic Conference play.

MacKenzie Garlock, Brandon Hagan and Jason Heath also scored for the Purple Ghosts, who held a 2-0 lead after one and a 6-2 advantage after two periods.

Shawn Mulverhill and Jared Marshall tallied second-period goals for Malone and Dan Rondeau was busy in the Huskies' net with 39 saves.
