PLATTSBURGH — The scoreboard said the game ended in a 3-all overtime tie.

But, for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team Friday night, it felt more like a loss.

The Cardinals couldn't hold a three-goal third-period lead and had their first semester end on a sour note as Potsdam battled back for a tie in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The tie did not sit well with Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery, who was unavailable to the media for comment after the game.

When Vick Schlueter scored a short-handed goal with 1:49 gone in the third period, the Cardinals (7-1-2, 6-1-1) appeared headed for a victory. Schlueter took the puck down the right side and sent a low shot into the net from just outside the slot.

Plattsburgh State, however, did not play smart with the lead and the Bears (5-5-1, 3-4-1), to their credit, fought back.

Todd Hosmer, skating in on the far side of the net, scored a power-play goal at 3:14 to make it 3-1.

Then, Colin MacLennan, taking advantage of a Plattsburgh State giveaway, tallied from in close shortly after, at 4:42, to make it 3-2.

Then, at 12:52, Potsdam completed its comeback when Fraser Smith sent a shot from between the slots into an open net with Plattsburgh State goaltender Josh Leis caught out of his goal.

There were, however, still some exciting moments in overtime.

The Cardinals were called for a hooking penalty 47 seconds into the extra session, but it was Plattsburgh State which nearly won the game when Dylan Clarke sent a hard shot off the crossbar with the Cardinals down a skater.

A little later, Potsdam goaltender Trevor O'Neill came up with a sensational sliding save on a rebound to preserve the tie.

Following a scoreless first period, Schlueter gave the Cardinals the lead when he tallied on a rebound for a power-play goal at 6:43 of the second.

Then, shortly after at 7:34, Kyle Kudroch put Plattsburgh State up, 2-0, when he scored on a wraparound.

Plattsburgh State finished with a 36-31 shot advantage, with Leis making 28 saves and O'Neill, 33.

In other SUNYAC action Friday night, Oswego improved its first-place lead in the conference with a 10-1 thumping of Brockport. Cortland skated to a 5-3 win over Geneseo and Buffalo State was a 6-4 winner at Morrisville.
