WESTPORT — Nathan Gay scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter Thursday night and Westport rallied for a 52-48 victory over Schroon Lake in Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference boys' basketball.
The Wildcats jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter and held a 23-15 lead after a cold-shooting second stanza.
"It was our first game and we came out flat," said Westport coach Brad Rascoe. "They came out hitting their shots and Cody Armstrong hit two three-pointers in the first quarter for them."
But, the Eagles got it together after intermission and outscored Schroon Lake by a combined 37-25 in the second half, including a 22-13 edge in the third.
"We made a couple of changes, but the main thing was that we picked up the intensity," Rascoe said.
In addition to Gay's 23 points, Bo McKinley tossed in 19 as the two combined for 42 of Westport's 52 points. Gay hauled down 16 rebounds and both Kevin Russell and Jesse Stevens added seven apiece.
Armstrong finished with 15 points to lead the Wildcats. Brennan Bush added 12 and Wesley Beers, 11.
