PERU — The Beekmantown wrestling team jumped on Peru early Wednesday night.
The Indians, however, finished strong.
Kyle Lovejoy's pin in 54 seconds at 152 pounds, the final match of the evening, gave Peru a 40-33 victory over the defending Champlain Valley Athletic Conference champions in the season opener for the two rivals.
Pete Avellaneda won by a 13-7 decision at 145 to pull the Eagles to within 34-33, setting the stage for Lovejoy's win.
"It's better to start the season with a win than a loss," said Peru co-head coach Gary Edwards. "I was happy with how we wrestled, except for a couple of matches."
The early-season showdown started at 160 and the Eagles won the first five matches.
Nick Avellaneda won by a 12-4 decision at 160, Nick Bushey by forfeit at 171, Nick Lucia with a 1-0 decision at 189, Brandon Jabaut by forfeit at 215 and Hayden Head by fall in 4:52 at 285.
Then, Peru came back with four wins — three by forfeit. Kyler Agoney won by forfeit at 96, Jacob Goddeau by fall in 1:41 at 103, Arik Robinson by forfeit at 112 and Alex Pugh by forfeit at 119.
Jesse Daniels stemmed the tide for Beekmantown by winning by technical fall at 125.
The Indians, however, then came back with three wins to take a 34-33 advantage. Patrick Hogan posted an 11-1 decision at 130, Troy Seymour a 3-1 win at 135 and Jacob Bell a 7-3 victory at 140.
Seymour's win came in a very good match with Koby Barcomb. Both were sectional champions a year ago.
"Troy went up in weight and wrestled well," Edwards said. "That was a big win for us.
"Bell and Lovejoy also wrestled well, as did Noah Phillips, despite losing by technical fall to (Jesse) Daniels."
