POTSDAM — The Cardinals went to Errol Daniyan on the first play of the game.
They went back to him on the first play of the second half.
Each time Daniyan produced points, something he did often as the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team defeated Clarkson, 85-75, Sunday at Alumni Gymnasium.
Daniyan finished with 19 points and six rebounds, shooting 5-for-6 from the field and 9-for-12 from the free throw line to help the Cardinals (4-1) post its first three-game win streak since the 2007-08 season.
"Right now, if we get the ball into Errol, they have to foul him to stop him," Plattsburgh State coach Tom Curle said. "We really need to get him more touches. He's just making free throws. If he continue to make free throws like that, he's going to be real tough."
The Cardinals jumped out to an early advantage by using the long-range game, connecting on their first five 3-pointers to push the lead to 14 points in the first eight minutes. When the Golden Knights cut the lead to 27-22, the Cardinals responded with a 24-4 run to close out the half ahead 51-26.
"The first half we did an outstanding job of following the game plan"¦in the second half we didn't. I'm not displeased with our effort, but it has to be a lesson learned," he said. "If we can get as good as we were in the first half and stay there we have a chance to be real good."
The Golden Knights (3-1) cut the lead to 10 in the second half with a little more than three minutes remaining. Clarkson pulled within eight on three separate occasions, but the Cardinals hit their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
"That's the second time we had a big lead at the half and our defensive intensity was abated in the second half," Curle said. "It just comes down to individual pride a little bit."
Rey Jefferson scored 19 points for Clarkson before he left the game with five minutes left after sustaining a head injury.
The Cardinals have had a renaissance in free-throw shooting so far this season.
Ranked second to last in Division III last year in free-throw percentage, Plattsburgh State has connected on 71 percent from the charity stripe. Against Clarkson, the Cardinals hit on 23-of-32.
"I don't want to go down there again," said Curle, referencing the dubious ranking the Cardinals had in free-throw shooting last season.
Steve Thomas added 21 points and Carl Munnerlyn chipped in 18 for his first double-digit point total as a Cardinal. Overall, Plattsburgh State shot 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.
"What I really liked is we came back from Thanksgiving, we had two days to put in a game plan, and they executed it extremely well," Curle said.
The Cardinals return home Tuesday for a matchup against St. Lawrence at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
