POTSDAM — It took until the 5:04 mark of the first half for the short-handed Plattsburgh State women's basketball team to get its first first field goal of the game Sunday.
By that time, Clarkson University had built up a 14-1 lead and the Golden Knights went on to record 79-50 non-conference victory.
"We were missing four kids and about 80 minutes — and it showed," said Plattsburgh State head coach Cheryl Cole.
"We didn't get off to a good start. They came out flying and it gave them confidence. Everything we shot rolled off the rim and then we started to force stuff."
The Cardinals did regroup to cut their deficit to 23-18 midway through the first half, before the Golden Knights went on a run to take a 40-24 lead into intermission.
"We were able to battle back and then ran out of legs," Cole said. "And, they started to hit some three-pointers."
Michelle Reddinger led the Golden Knights (1-3), who picked up their first win of the season, with 19 points and Katie Goldberg added 16, including four three-pointers.
The only bright spot for the Cardinals (1-3) was Taylor Amarando, who finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
However, the rest of the Plattsburgh State players combined to go only 10-of-46 from the field.
The Cardinals, for the game shot 17-of-64 from the floor for 26 percent, while the Golden Knights were 32-of-61 for 52.5 percent.
Clarkson also hurt Plattsburgh State from the three-point line, going seven-of-15, while the Cardinals were just one-of-13.
"We didn't shoot well and they did," Cole said. "We needed to make some changes, but weren't able to do so because of our lack of depth. We still worked pretty hard, but were gassed. We still, however, have to board better and defend better."
The Cardinals will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when they host St. Lawrence University.
"This isn't the situation we want to be in, with the players missing," Cole said. "Hopefully, we can get a couple of them back this week.
"We can play better than we did in this game."
