Cardinals lose in Shootout

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team didn't win the Annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout this weekend.

The Cardinals, however, still had plenty to be pleased about.

Plattsburgh State and host Norwich University battled to a 1-all overtime tie in Saturday's championship game at Kreitzberg Arena before the Cadets were a 4-3 winner in a shootout. The game officially goes into the books as a tie.

"It was a great weekend for Cardinal Hockey," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "There were a lot of good things and a lot of moral victories.

"Norwich is a tough team at home and we were still able to get three points on the weekend. We gave up only two goals — one each in back-to-back games against Middlebury and Norwich.

"The only thing we're not bringing home is the trophy."

The Cadets (3-0-1) outshot the Cardinals (7-1-1), 14-5, in the first period and took a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds in. Norwich took advantage of a Plattsburgh State defensive miscue and Scott Schroeder was able to take advantage.

It stayed 1-0 Norwich until 43 seconds were gone in the third period. Vick Schlueter fed the puck in front and Eric Satim one-timed it into the net from the slot to tie it.

It remained 1-all through the overtime and it then went 10 rounds into the shootout before the Cadets finally emeged with a 4-3 win.

"It was a battle," Emery said. "I felt we had the better chances — we kept a lot of their shots to the outside.

"They outplayed us in the first period, but we're in good shape and we took it to them in the third."

Norwich finished with a 36-32 shot advantage, despite the Cardinals holding a combined 16-8 edge in the third period and overtime.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Ryan Klingensmith made 31 saves in net for the Cadets and Ryan Williams played well in the Plattsburgh State nets, stopping 35 of 36.

"I never thought about it before, but there was much more snow in their crease after the third period and overtime, and that worked to our disadvantage in the shootout," Emery joked.

Neither team was able to score on the powerplay as the Cardinals went 0-for-7 and the Cadets, 0-for-4.

Williams and forward Dan Sliasis represented the Cardinals on the all-tournament team.

The Cardinals return home to host Potsdam State on Friday in State University of New York Athletic Conference play that will end the first semester.

"We need to take care of business in that game and we'll end the first semester on a good note," Emery said.

It was a 3-all game following a high-scoring first period. Ken Suchoski then put Middlebury ahead to stay, at 4-3, midway through the second stanza.

The Panthers then broke it open with three goals in the third.

Mathieu Dubuc added two goals and an assist for Middlebury, while Charlie Townsend and Charles Nerbak also tallied. Max Kennedy turned away 23 of 26 shots in net for the Panthers.
