NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Patrick Jobb's creativity gave the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team some breathing room Friday.

Jobb's third-period goal helped lift the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over Middlebury College in the opening round of the Annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Kreitzberg Arena.

Plattsburgh State will play host Norwich University, an easy 9-1 winner over Wisconsin-Stout, in tonight's championship game at 7. Middlebury and Wisconsin-Stout tangle in the third-place contest at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals held a 2-1 lead when Jobb made it a two-goal advantage at the 7:44 mark. The freshman skated in on the side before he banked the puck off Panthers' goaltender John Yanchek from a near impossible angle and into the net.

"Absolutely, I was just trying to get the puck on net and hopefully create a rebound in front," said Jobb. "The puck hit the goalie in the back of the leg and went in."

"Jobb had a great game and that was a great play," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We wanted our players to take the puck wide because the middle was clogged up.

"The third goal was big for us. We didn't want to go into a prevent defense, but we were able to play smart with the lead. I'm happy — it was a big win for us."

It, however, didn't start out well for the Cardinals (7-1) when defenseman Chris Steele scored a power-play goal for the Panthers (1-1-1) with just 1:39 gone. Steele's low shot from just inside the blue line beat Cardinals' goalie Josh Leis.

"We made a bad defensive error that led to their power-play goal," Emery said. "The puck was tipped on the way in. But, our penalty kill was good after that."

Plattsburgh State drew even at the 7:41 mark. Vick Schlueter took the puck behind the net and centered it in front where Eric Satim scored up top from between the slots.

It remained 1-all until the Cardinals took the lead for good on Dan Sliasis' power-play goal at 16:09 of the second. Sliasis was stationed on the far side of the net when he got the puck in close.

"It was a nice tic-tac-toe passing play, with Sliasis getting a piece of the puck," Emery said.

Middlebury had a goal called back five minutes into the second period due to a high stick.

Both teams were credited with 20 shots on goal, with Leis making 19 saves for the Cardinals and Yanchek 17 stops for the Panthers.

"Two good skating teams were involved and it was a fun game to watch," Emery said. "We have a short time to enjoy the win, however, and get prepared for tomorrow."

"The game had a good pace and it was a fun game to play in," Jobb said. "We got the 'W' and that's most important."

Blake Forkey tallied a hat trick in the second period alone as the host Cadets (3-0) rolled past the Blue Devils (4-3-2), who were anything but Stout.

Kyle Thomas scored the first two goals of the game, while Colin Mulvey, Steven Schroeder, Eric Tallent and Steve Coon added a goal each for Norwich, which held a huge 53-14 shot advantage.

The Cadets held a 3-0 lead after one period and improved that to 8-0 after two.

Derek Hanson's goal with 5:04 left in the third put Wisconsin-Stout on the scoreboard.
