Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

Fishing expert to speak on bass tourneys
PLATTSBURGH — Fishing tournaments are big business in the Lake Champlain region, according to Dr. Tim Mihuc, director of SUNY Plattsburgh's Lake Champlain Sea Institute.

As a result, the institute will host a seminar, "Biology of Catch-and-Release: Implications for Management of Fishing Tournaments," Dec. 9, from 6:30-9 p.m., in the Cardinal Lounge, Angell College Center.

"The Lake Champlain Research Institute has been interested in catch-and-release for a while now, and it's time for an educational opportunity for the community," said Mihuc. "We hope to attract the public, anglers, and anyone who has an interest in Lake Champlain."

The seminar will feature Dr. Bruce Tufts from Queen's University in Ontario, an internationally recognized expert on catch and release fishing.

Tufts has done extensive lab work on the topic and, in turn, has worked directly with event organizers to decrease tournament impacts on the ecology of lakes and the environment.

Tufts will discuss the structure of bass populations as well as his work reducing bass tournament fish mortalities in Canada. The workshop will include introductions by Mark Malchoff, a Sea Grant extension specialist at the institute, along with a panel discussion.

This seminar is the first session in the 2009 Lake Champlain Fisheries Leadership Institute Seminar Series. Future topics will continue to center on lake ecology.

Seton's Ryan qualifies for nationals
AUGUSTA, Me. — Mitchell Ryan, a freshman at Seton Catholic, has continued his stellar rookie season in cross country. Last weekend, he competed in the Region 1 Junior Olympics Qualifiers in Augusta, Me., finishing 13th, overall, in a time of 14:33 over the 4K course in the Boys' Youth Division

The top 20 individuals qualified for the USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships to be held Dec. 12 at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, Nevada.

CCC sets visit for prospective athletes
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College Athletic Department will host an Athlete Visit Day Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is geared toward students interested in National Junior College Athletic Association soccer, basketball, baseball and softball.

Campus Visitation Days consist of a presentation by an admissions advisor, questions and answers, as well as a campus tour and tour of the residence halls.

Placid to host nordic combined event
LAKE PLACID — The road to Vancouver and the 2010 Winter Games will continue to make its way through Lake Placid Dec. 19-20 when 54 athletes from 13 countries compete in the FIS Continental Cup Nordic Combined. Several countries, including the United States, will try to qualify athletes for February's Games.

Eleven athletes from the U.S. will battle it out for two remaining Olympic team positions and possibly join 2009 World Champion Billy Demong (Vermontville, N.Y.) and Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), a four-time Olympian and 2009 World Champion, on the squad.

Austria's Felix Gottwald and Finland's Hannu Manninen are expected to headline the international field. Gottwald is a six-time Olympic medalist and eight-time world championship medalist, while Manninen has captured 45-career World Cup victories and six world championship medals. Manninen also has three Olympic medals, the first of which he won at the age of 15 during the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

Competition begins both Saturday and Sunday with ski jumping, at the Olympic Jumping Complex, at 10 a.m., followed by cross country ski racing, at the Olympic Sports Complex, at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Dodgeball tournament slated for Dec. 30
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Bureau, Town of Plattsburgh, and City of Plattsburgh will co-sponsor a free Dodgeball Tournament for all Clinton County youth in grades 7-12.

The Tri-Rec Dodgeball Tournament will take place at the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Gym on Dec. 30 with the Junior Division (grades 7-9) starting at 9 a.m. and Senior Division (10-12) at 12:30 p.m. Space is limited to 8 teams per division and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-Registration is required by Dec. 28.

ESG snowshoe qualifiers begin today
LAKE PLACID — The 2010 Empire State Winter Games will be held Feb. 19-21 in Lake Placid.

All area sprint qualifiers are free and open to all New York State residents 12 years and over. The first qualifier will be held today at Laphams Mills Recreation Park in Peru, starting at 11 a.m.

The top 20 qualifying times in each age group/gender category for the sprints/ 1,500 will be invited to compete in the ESG Winter Games in Lake Placid.

Additionally, there is a 5-kilometer snowshoe race. All who complete one 5K qualifier will be eligible to compete in the ESG Games. The 5K snowshoe qualifiers will be held Dec. 27 and Jan. 16 at Cadyville Recreation Park, 114 Goddeau Road, at 11 a.m. A $2 fee will cover refreshments after the race.

A listing of qualified athletes will be posted after Feb. 7 on the ESG Web site. However, new this year, in order to compete, qualified individuals will have to register on line and pay a registration fee in addition to the annual ESSRA membership fee.
