PLATTSBURGH — There won't be a shortage of talent at this weekend's Annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout.

There never is.

Four of the top 10 teams in the latest USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll will be in action at Norwich's University's Kreitzberg Arena.

Plattsburgh State takes to the ice today at 4 p.m. against Middlebury in the opening round. Wisconsin-Stout tangles with Norwich in the second game at 7 p.m.

Plattsburgh State (6-1), Middlebury (1-0-1), Norwich (2-0-0) and Wisconsin-Stout (4-2-2) have combined for a 13-3-3 record thus far.

Plattsburgh State is currently ranked third, Wisconsin-Stout seventh, Middlebury ninth and Norwich 10th.

"We'll find out a lot about ourselves," Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery said. "We have young guys in key positions.

"Middlebury and Norwich have played only two games so far, but once you get a couple of games in, you get your feet wet. So I don't think we'll have an advantage. That shows because we haven't won the tournament that much in the past."

This marks the 12th year of the event. The Cardinals won in 1999 (6-3 over Middlebury) and 2007 (5-3 over Norwich).

Norwich has won the tournament title five times and Middlebury has won four, including last year with a 3-2 win over the rival Cadets.

"We're going in there on a high note and our practices have been good," Emery said. "Fun comes when we win games, but we can't rely on what happened last weekend.

"It's going to come down to hard work and dedication. We're stepping up in class, and we need our guys in key positions to play well. It's a great tournament and an exciting part of the year."

The Cardinals improved their season record and State University of New York Athletic Conference mark to 6-1 with one-sided wins at Buffalo State (7-0) and Fredonia (10-2) a weekend ago.

"I was surprised by the scores last weekend," Emery said. "But the name of the game is goaltending, and our opponents didn't get the kind of goaltending they needed.

"Don't get me wrong — we carried the play in both games. But the scores were not indicative of what they could have been if our opponents got good goaltending.

"It's always a tough road trip to get four points and it was really gratifying to do so. No doubt, we're such a young team with freshmen and sophomores, and we're learning more about ourselves every week."
