32nd Peru Turkey Trot Thursday
PERU — The 32nd-Annual John P. Adams Memorial Turkey Trot, hosted by the Peru Lions Club, will be held Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Peru Intermediate School cafeteria, next tot he Route 22B playground. The one-mile fun run/walk will start at 9 a.m. and the 5- and 10-kilometer races, shortly after.
Entry fee is $15 forthe 5 and 10K races and $5 for the mile fun run/walk. Trophies are awarded to the male and female winners of the 5 and 10K events and ribbons presented to the top three finishers in each age group. Runners' towels will be given to all participants in the 5 and 10K races. All participants will be entered in the drawings for turkeys and other prizes.

Ski, snowboard column returns
PLATTSBURGH — The popular skiing and snowboarding column by John Bernardi will begin for the season on Nov. 27. Slopesider will be featured in the sports section on every other Friday throughout the winter season and will offer entertainment, news and information.
Bernardi is an avid lifelong skier and freelance writer who resides in Saranac with his wife and their three sons.
Bob Goetz, sports editor for the Press Republican said, "we are looking forward to John's column again this year. It is very popular, informative and entertaining."
Bernardi plans to cover a wide variety of aspects again this season including, technique, equipment, conditioning, culture and more. He told the Press Republican, "I hope to share some knowledge, poke some fun and stir the imagination a bit. Above all though, I hope to share my passion for the enriching lifestyle associated with skiing and snowboarding."
Mackrell earns ECAC honor
CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Plattsburgh State junior Mandy Mackrell on Tuesday has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Goaltender of the Week, for the period ending Sunday. This marks her first ECAC weekly award since Nov. 13, 2007.
Mackrell, of Cleveland, Ohio, backstopped the nationally-ranked Cardinals to a pair of one-goal victories against then-No. 2 and defending conference champion Elmira, compiling a 2.48 goals-against average and 44 saves in 121 minutes and 3 seconds of action. She had a career-high 26 saves in a 3-2 win Saturday, including several shots from point-blank range in the third period when Plattsburgh was outshot 15-6 and Elmira was desperate to tie the game. It marks her first-ever victories over Elmira, which was also defeated on Sunday by a 4-3 score in overtime.
In other Cardinal hockey news, Plattsburgh climbs two spots to No. 2 in the NCAA Division III poll compiled by USCHO.com, which was released on Monday. The 4-0 Cardinals received a season-high 135 points, including a first-place vote, to jump Gustavus-Adolphus, which fell from No. 3 to 5, and Elmira, which dropped to third. Defending national champion Amherst is No. 1 with 146 points and 13 first-place votes.
Collica gets Chancellor's honor
FREDONIA — Kaitlin Collica, a senior on the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team, has been named the State University of New York Athleltic Conference Fall Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award recipient for women's soccer.
The award is handed out annually in each sport sponsored by the SUNYAC to a first or second all-conference team member with the highest grade-point average. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least three semesters completed.
A defender from Baldwin, Collica was a member of the 2009 All-SUNYAC Second Team and also earned Academic All-District First Team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Collica scored two goals this season and started in all 19 of the Cardinals' games. She helped the team record six shutouts, go 3-1-1 against Top-25 teams as part of a 10-6-3 overall record, peak at No. 11 in the national rankings and qualify for its first NCAA Division III Championship tournament appearance since 1995.
Collica also 3.83 cumulative grade-point average as a nursing major, and volunteers to help raise money for several charities.
Youth Bureau sets hoop clinics
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Bureau Basketball Program is in need of referees for its third-fourth and fifth-sixth grade programs, which will run from Jan. 9 through Feb. 27. Also, officials will be needed for the seventh-eighth grade program, which will run from March 6-27.
General knowledge of the rules, playing experience, and experience working with children desired. The pay is $18 to 20$ per game. Referees will be hired to officiate games at the 3rd through 8th grade level. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older and must attend one clinic.

Paul Smith's Hingston honored
PAUL SMITHS — Paul Smith's College freshman forward Ryan Hingston was named Sunrise Conference Rookie of the Week Tuesday. Hingston averaged 11.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist in four games for the Bobcats.
The freshman from Barnstead, N.H. recorded a double-double against D'Youville College with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked three shots in that game and shot 36 percent from the floor for the week.
ORDA venues open for holidays
LAKE PLACID — So the weather hasn't been too cooperative when it comes to making snow at Whiteface, but that doesn't mean there still isn't plenty to do and see this Thanksgiving holiday weekend in and around Lake Placid. There will be bobsledding, gondola rides and skating all weekend long.
Visitors to the Olympic Sports Complex track at Mt. Van Hoevenberg will have a turn to experience the twists and curves of the track as they ride with a professional driver and brakeman from the half-mile start. Passenger rides will be available beginning, Friday, from 1:30-4 p.m. and continuing Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Reservations can be made by e-mailing oscreservations@orda.org or by calling 523.4436.
Gondola rides will also be available throughout the weekend, beginning Friday. The eight-person Cloudsplitter Gondola carries passengers from the main base lodge to the top of Little Whiteface.Operating hours are from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Public skating will also be available Friday and Saturday in the Olympic Center's 1932 rink. The hours on Friday are from 1:15-2:30 p.m. and on Saturday, from 7:30-9 p.m.
Open family swim continues
PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will continue to sponsor Open Family Swim at the Wellness Center, at PARC at 295 New York Road every Friday evening through March. Each session will be from 7-9 p.m. The sessions are open to persons of all ages and children not in diapers.
There is a charge of $2 per person for all participants. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Certified lifeguards are on duty at all times. Participants have use of the locker rooms, but everyone using the facility is responsible for bringing a towel. Also, it is recommended that water shoes be worn.

ESG snowshoe qualifiers begin
LAKE PLACID — The 2010 Empire State Winter Games will held Feb. 19-21 in Lake Placid. Individuals interested in qualifying for the snowshoe sprints must complete at least two qualifying races. Sprint races are at distances of 100, 200, 400 and 1,500 meters. You may qualify in the 100, 200 and 400 and/or the 1,500.
All area sprint qualifiers are free and open to all New York State residents 12 years and over. Qualifiers will be held Nov. 28, Dec. 5, Jan. 2 and Jan. 9 at Laphams Mills Recreation Park in Peru, starting at 11 a.m. The top 20 qualifying times in each age group/gender category for the sprints/ 1,500 will be invited to compete in the ESG Winter Games in Lake Placid.
Additionally, there is a 5-kilometer snowshoe race. All who complete one 5K qualifier will be eligible to compete in the ESG Games. The 5K snowshoe qualifiers will be held Dec. 27 and Jan. 16 at Cadyville Recreation Park, 114 Goddeau Road, at 11 a.m. A $2 fee will cover refreshments after the race.
A listing of qualified athletes will be posted after Feb. 7 on the ESG Web site. However, new this year, in order to compete, qualified individuals will have to register on line and pay a registration fee in addition to the annual ESSRA membership fee.
