Indian/Long Lake teams win openers

DID YOU KNOW?

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

INDIAN LAKE — Indian Lake/Long Lake built up a 14-point halftime lead and then held on for a 44-40 victory over Crown Point Monday night in a non-league boys' basketball game.

The two veteran teams figure to be in hunt for Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference honors this winter and they didn't disappoint in their first outing.

"It was a pretty good ballgame between two good Class D teams," Indian Lake/Long Lake Coach Jim Zullo said.

Kris Bain, who led all scorers with 23 points, demonstrated a good shooting touch for the Orange. He was 8-for-15 and 2-for-2 from 3-point range while grabbing eight rebounds. As a team, the Orange were 8-for-14 in 3-pointers.

"He's a 6-2 senior. We worked all summer on his 3-point game," Zullo related. "We had him in the post last year because we didn't have anyone else to put there, but now we can put Matt Rusch there. It frees Kris (Bain) to be more creative and shoot more. He can drive, also. He can be a difficult matchup."

Crown Point scored the first eight points of the game, but the host Orange rallied to take a 14-10 lead after one quarter and a 30-16 edge at the break.

"They zoned us the first half, but the second half they went man-to-man and became more aggressive," Zullo added. "And (6-foot-8 John) Budwick shut off everything inside.

"Bain hit a monster 3 with a minute to go that kind of sealed it."

Budwick finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds while newcomer Juan Mosquera contributed 12 points. Tony Rodriguez was credited with seven assists.

"The second half, we got to within one, but missed some easy shots," Crown Point Coach Randy Mandy said.

MINERVA — The Indian Lake/Long Orange had no trouble Monday night reaching the final of the Minerva/Newcomb Thanksgiving Tournament. But how they will do tonight against Schroon Lake in the final is anybody's guess.

Indian Lake/Long Lake rolled to a 64-20 victory over Johnsburg in the first round, but several of the Orange players will be unavailable for tonight's final. They will be on their way to Paris on a trip with the French Club.

"You can't fault them. It's a great opportunity and I wish I could go to France," said Orange Coach John Reynolds.

Elizabeth Hamden scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three assists to lead Indian Lake/Long Lake. Allison Pine chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. Jessica Bain also hit for 10 points.

"I was really pleased with the girls who came in off the bench," Reynolds added. "Bain came off the bench and had a really nice game."

Kelsey Williford scored 11 points to lead Johnsburg.
