PLATTSBURGH — Down by a goal, Elmira fired more shots in the third period than it had in the first two combined.

But Plattsburgh State held off the Soaring Eagles for a 3-2 ECAC West win at Stafford Ice Arena.

"We just kept the puck out of the net," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "They came at us pretty hard in the third. I think Mandy (Mackrell) did a great job. She stood tall in the third period, made some great saves.

"We got a little tired I think in the third, and obviously they were playing desperate hockey. I thought we did a good job keeping our composure at the end of the game."

All five goals were scored in the second period, including three in the last two minutes. Kayla McDougall netted the game-winner, and Stephanie Moberg finished with two assists for the Cardinals (3-0).

The two teams will face off again this afternoon.

In her second start of the season, Mackrell made 26 saves. She faced a flurry of shots about 5:30 into the third and turned them all away.

Before Saturday, the junior had only experienced this heated rivalry from the bench.

"I've been waiting to play Elmira for two years," Mackrell said. "I mean every game we've played against them, they've been dirty, they've done everything they could to beat us. And this is the team that I've wanted to beat for two years now.

"So it feels awesome to finally get the chance and finally have that win under my belt."

Plattsburgh State's Erika Shaubel struck first 4:11 into the second with a blast from the right point while Elmira was serving its second penalty of the period. Caitlin Metcalf tied it at 10:32.

The final two minutes of the period were frenzied.

Brittany Meade received a pass from behind the net and fired a quick shot out front. Elmira goalie Samantha Maguire made the save, but seconds later, Mackenzie Lee scored on a similar play. After the faceoff, the Cardinals came right back down and scored again — McDougall put it in from the left side with assists from Jordan Caldwell and Teal Gove.

The Soaring Eagles (3-1) grabbed some of the momentum back before the period ended. They had a great chance when Mackrell was out of the net, but the puck slid through the crease. Then Lindsay Mitchell poked the puck in from the left doorstep to make it 3-2 30 seconds before the second intermission.

Elmira put more pressure on the Cardinals in the third and outshot them 15-6.

"Basically, we got pretty pumped up in between periods. We knew that Elmira was going to come out really hard, and we basically just stayed focused," Mackrell said. "I kept my head in the game and wanted to be there for my teammates. So I just did everything I could to block the shot."

Plattsburgh State had to kill a penalty with 9:36 left and was whistled for another with 2:38 to go. Elmira put a shot off Mackrell's shoulder in the last two minutes and pulled Maguire, but the Soaring Eagles couldn't get the equalizer.

"It was nice to see us finally play a 20-minute period the way that we could, and had we done that for 60, I think it might have been a different game," Elmira coach Greg Fargo said. "That last 20 minutes is something to build on for (today)."

Maguire totaled 26 saves, and Mitchell finished with a goal and an assist.

The Cardinals, who held a 29-28 edge in total shots, had an 11-4 advantage in the opening period.

"Right from the start of the game, I thought we played extremely well and played with a lot of emotion," Houle said. "I thought we could have come out of the first period with a couple goals."
