BUFFALO — Cardinal veterans shook off to a slow start Friday night to score five goals in Plattsburgh State's 7-0 triumph over Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey.

The Cardinals improved to 5-1 and stayed on the heels of idle Oswego, 5-0. Plattsburgh moves on to Fredonia tonight to take on the Blue Devils. Fredonia (7-3, 5-2) defeated Potsdam 6-5 Friday night.

Cardinal Coach Bob Emery was looking for more goal production on the western swing and his returnees responded in Buffalo. Dylan Clarke scored twice while Eric Satim, Dan Sliasis and Mike Kavanagh each got a goal.

"It's good to see Clarke score. He's been playing well, but he's been snake-bitten," Emery said.

"We had some good production tonight. We did a great job possessing the puck, which is actually the best defense."

The Cardinals outshot Buffalo State (1-6-1, 1-5) 27-18. Freshman Josh Leis recorded the shutout.

Clarke and Satim scored less than three minutes apart late in the opening period and then Kavanagh and freshman Chris Wieland knocked in power-play goals midway through the second to give the Cardinals a 4-goal cushion. Ian DeLong also connected as Plattsburgh scored three goals in a 4½-minute span.

Plattsburgh, 4-for-8 on the powerplay, finished off the Bengals with two goals in the third, enjoying a manpower advantage on both scores. Clarke and Sliasis got the goals and assists.

The Cardinals were 0-for-6 in penalty-killing, but took eight penalties for 16 minutes.

"The only negative part about tonight's game was that we got eight penalties," Emery added.

Junior forward Kyle VanderMale has his bell rung in the third period and he's listed as doubtful for tonight.

Vick Schlueter and Tom Breslin, both sitting out Friday's game for disciplinary reasons, will be back in the lineup tonight. Ryan Williams will get the start in goal.

Plattsburgh has never had an easy time in Fredonia and there's no reason to think the Blue Devils will make it any more comfortable tonight.

"Fredonia is a tough place to play. If they get the lead on you, they make it a long night," Emery cautioned.

"We have to come ready to play and to play smart defense."

In other games, Geneseo edged Brockport 2-1 and Cortland defeated Morrisville 6-4.
