PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State scored the first nine points of Friday's game and was never in trouble as it opened the Cardinal Classic with a 92-59 win over Albany Pharmacy.
The Cardinals (1-1) play in today's championship game against Baruch, which beat Castleton State 77-45 in Friday's second contest.
"We needed to just get a good game under our belts and get a win," Plattsburgh State coach Cheryl Cole said. "We're going to have to be tougher (today), obviously. It's just good to get our first win of the season and get something to build on."
Taylor Amarando paced Plattsburgh State with 26 points and 11 rebounds, and four other Cardinals reached double figures in scoring. Alex Oaks, Katie McCormack and Kelly VanValkenburgh each scored 13 for the Panthers (1-3), who dressed just seven players.
Molly Harte, who had 15 points and seven boards, said the Cardinals played with more energy than in their season opener at Norwich.
"We definitely came out with more intensity, and we had it for most of the game," Harte said. "We need to play a little better and box out more."
Plattsburgh State used pressure defense and quickness in transition to hurt Albany Pharmacy from the get-go. The Panthers had to call a time out after falling behind 14-2 less than five minutes in.
The Cardinals pushed their lead above 20 points about seven minutes before halftime after Stephanie McCoy scored on back-to-back fast breaks and the Cardinals got a steal near their own basket and converted it into another layup. Plattsburgh led 50-23 at halftime.
Catherine Cassidy was 3-for-3, including two 3-pointers, in the first half for 10 points. She finished with 14 points and 11 assists.
Plattsburgh State was up by 45 just past the midway point of the second half.
Amarando had 16 of her points and 8 of her rebounds after halftime. The junior forward was out sick for part of the preseason, and Cole said she's still getting into game shape.
"She didn't finish incredibly well with the high-percentage shots she had. But she obviously filled it up," Cole said. "We're still trying to get her rolling. So I thought she definitely had a mission and I think she played hard tonight.
"They'll double her tomorrow, so she's going to have to read the defense better."
Lyndsey Moore tossed in 12 points for Plattsburgh State, and Lindsey Larivee added 10.
The Cardinals shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half and finished at 50 percent.
"We definitely shoot a lot better than we shot last year, and that's going to be important because Taylor will demand double teams, and we've gotta be able to find other avenues," Cole said. "And I thought a lot of people got involved, a lot of people contributed, and that's just nice to see, that we don't have to rely entirely on Taylor."
Nora Campbell, who was hurt in practice this week, was using crutches and wearing a protective boot on her left foot Friday. Cole said the forward will be out at least the rest of the semester. Kerri Salisbury is also out with an injury this weekend, and Ashley Gyscek dressed but didn't play, although Cole expects her to play today.
Baruch (1-0) led its game by 11 at halftime and outscored Castleton State 42-21 in the second half. Monique Salmon led the Bearcats with 18 points, and Christine Jaques had 19 for the Spartans (1-1).
Castleton and Albany Pharmacy will meet in today's third-place game.
