Hockey Cards head west

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team opened its 2009-10 road schedule last weekend with a 5-1 win at Morrisville.

The Cardinals are hoping to double that success this weekend.

Plattsburgh State is at Buffalo State tonight at 7 p.m. and Fredonia on Saturday at 7 p.m. in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

"This is our toughest road trip of the season," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "We'll see what we're made of.

"There was a lot of pressure on the first (Division III) poll that had us No. 1, even though we weren't deserving. The SUNYAC standings mean a lot more than the poll.

"Buffalo State and Fredonia still have to come to our place where we feel confident. But, we need to take care of business this weekend to stay within striking distance of Oswego in the standings."

The Cardinals (4-1, 4-1) are still looking for some of their veteran forwards to get untracked. But, Emery said it's only a matter of time if they continue to work hard.

"We don't have a ton of pure scorers, at least not at this point," he said. "We're not scoring as much as we can.

"I always like balanced scoring, but some of our veterans aren't scoring like they are capable of. They are getting their chances, however, and that's important. They're putting too much pressure on themselves."

The Cardinals, who are mixing several freshmen in the line-up, haven't had the luxury of their entire team available due to suspensions and injuries.

"We haven't been at full strength yet and we won't be this weekend," Emery said.

Junior forward Dan Sliasis did return to the line-up last weekend after being out with an injury and that helped.

"He played a great game and worked hard," Emery said. "He was our best forward on the ice."

Four of the five Cardinals' goals scored against Morrisville were by defensemen, including three freshmen.

"We want to get our defensemen involved in the offense, but we can't rely on them to lead the team in scoring," Emery said.

Buffalo State is off to a 1-4 start in conference play and is 1-5-1 overall on the season.

The Bengals, outside of a 6-5 win over Cortland, are struggling to score. Buffalo State has tallied two goals in four games and one goal in the two others.

Junior forward Nick Petriello (5-4-9) leads the team in goals and points and sophomore Alan Fritch has done all the goaltending to this point with a 4.42 GAA.

Meanwhile, Fredonia, which hosts Potsdam tonight, is 3-2 in the SUNYAC and 5-3-0 overall. The Blue Devils, who always play the Cardinals tough, went on the road last weekend and came back to two wins — 5-0 over Geneseo and 5-3 at Brockport.

The Blue Devils have scored 39 goals in eight games, with senior forward James Muscatello (7-5-12), junior forward Alex Morton (6-5-11) and senior forward Jeff Aonso (0-11-11) leading the way. Seven players have eight points or more thus far.

Senior Pat Street (4-1, 2.93 GAA) and sophomore Kody Van Rentergem (1-2, 2.78 GAA) are Fredonia's goaltenders.
