PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State junior Mike Heymann will be making his third appearance in as many years at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country National Championships, hosted this year by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. The race is set to take place on Saturday, November 21, at noon and the chosen venue is the Highland Park Golf Course in Highland Hills, Ohio.
Heymann, who finished 20th at the meet a year ago, was one of seven individual runners to earn an at-large bid to the big show out of the Atlantic Regional held last week. He finished the regional competition in second-place in a time of24:53.8, just 13 seconds out of first, and picked up First Team All-Atlantic Region honors for the third-straight year.
"Mike has had a tremendous junior season this year, he has really grasped the concept of training smart and racing hard and it is paying dividends. He has to be feeling confident after finishing second to the two-time national champion last weekend, and he made a very strong move in the last mile to pull away from two guys that have a shot at the top-10 this weekend, (Zach Maher of New York University and Lee Berube of Geneseo). Mike can race with anyone in the country. When it comes down to the top-10 in the country, anyone can do anything on any given day, and I think Mike has a shot to do something no male has done before in school history on Saturday," commented Cardinal head coach John Lynch.
If Heymann were to finish in the top-10 at the national meet, he would be the first Cardinal men's cross country runner to do so. Previously Plattsburgh had two runners finish in 11th place at the event, Corey Davidson accomplished the feat in 1999 and Matt DeShane did it in 2006.

Two members of the Plattsburgh State women's cross country team also will be competing in the NCAA Division III National Championships meet, hosted this year by Baldwin-Wallace College out of Berea, Ohio. Senior Jenny Schaffhouser and sophomore Stefanie Braun will represent the Cardinals after earning at-large bids out of the Atlantic Region.
Schaffhouser will be making her fourth-straight appearance at the event, having placed fourth a year ago. At the regional meet, Schaffhouser placed seventh in a time of 22:15.0 and picked up her third First Team All-Atlantic Region honor in as many years.
"Jenny has had a historic career here at Plattsburgh, possibly being the only female athlete to attend four NCAA cross country championships for the Cardinals. She had a career elevating performance on this stage last year and she has been at a higher level all fall than she was last year. We are hoping she puts it together again on the biggest stage this weekend and ends her historic cross country career at Plattsburgh State on a high note. I really believe Jenny's best race this season will be this weekend," Plattsburgh head coach John Lynch stated.
Meanwhile, Braun moved up 20 places from last year and finished 11th in the regional race in a time of 22:40.5. She earned her first-ever First Team All-Atlantic Region accolade.
"This will be Stefanie's first NCAA appearance, and she has worked very hard over the last year to emerge as one of the regions top runners. I am looking for her to gain some experience racing at this level for her future racing career. Your first NCAA is always a shock, her biggest challenge will be to overcome her nerves and to follow her race plan to perfection; if she does this she can surprise a lot of people. Stefanie's best race has yet to come," predicted Lynch.
The championship race is set to take place on Saturday, at 11 a.m. and the chosen venue is the Highland Park Golf Course in Highland Hills, Ohio.
