PLATTSBURGH — North Country Community College's pressure defense rattled an inexperienced Clinton Community College women's basketball team Tuesday.
But in the second half, the Cougars showed some poise and held off the Saints 69-59.
"I saw some of our freshmen mature from the first half," Clinton coach Donna Dixon said. "We were able to keep our composure and finish them off.
"It was just one of those games where we had to get experience as we went."
Shannon Nutbrown led Clinton (3-1, 2-0) with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Johni Rae Coryea scored 17 and grabbed nine boards, and Brittany Godreau added 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Clinton went to the free-throw line 42 times and shot 64 percent, converting down the stretch to pull away. Half of Nutbrown's points came from the foul line.
The Cougars led by as many as 10 in the first half, and then the Saints stepped up their defense and pulled within two by halftime.
"They picked up their defensive pressure," Dixon said. "We panicked a little with the ball, turned the ball over and let them back in it. We're young, inexperienced and we're not used to that kind of defensive pressure.
"With about 11 minutes left in the second half, we were able to take advantage of their aggressive defense and have some confidence in our ball handling. And then they fouled us. But we picked up our intensity on offense, too."
Kaitlin Cring paced North Country with 15 points, Olga Garcia scored 10 and Octavia Daye and Secoya Wright each added nine.
"Give North Country credit," Dixon said. "They played very, very hard defense. We had to finish and make our free throws in the second half."
