10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Seton Catholic standout Jason Jabaut accepts a full scholarship to Villanova University for cross country and track & field.

Sam Maldonado runs for 361 yards and 5 touchdowns, including 4 in the second half, as Harrison pulls away from Peru, 48-17, in the state Class B semis.

John Friedrich and Kevin Ryan score as Chazy tops Fillmore 2-0 in the Boys' Class D soccer semifinals. The Eagles, however, fall to Faith Heritage, 2-1, in the final with Friedrich scoring.

The Seton Catholic boys fall to Naples, 2-0, in the Class C soccer semifinals. The Knights' Ryan Gingrich is named the top goalkeeper in the state for Class C.

Defensive end Dave Staley and wide receiver Brian Chreitzberg are named to the First Team All-Empire Football League while linebacker Jamie Lozier and running back Dan Marbut earn second-team honors.

Former Saranac standouts Corey Davidson and Kelly Duffy of Plattsburgh State earn All-America honors in cross-country. Davidson finishes 11th in the NCAA Div. III championships to get the honor for second year in a row while Duffy finishes 26th for the women.

20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Lake Placid skiing sensation Gibson LaFontaine, 19, suffers a knee injury in Colorado while training for the World Cup alpine circuit.

MVP Chad Martinovich hits Chris McGill 49-yard scoring strike with 1:42 left, lifting Seton Catholic to a 20-13 win over Carthage in the North Country Super Bowl.

Bruce Higgenbotham carries 28 times for 157 yards and a touchdown while Rick Voudren runs for 131 and 2 TDs as Saranac Lake beats St. Lawrence Central 27-14 in the North Country Class B football playoff. The Redskins' Wade Montroy is the outstanding lineman.

Malone's Chad Lawrence places fifth and Plattsburgh's Kyle Watson, 19th, in the Federation cross-country meet.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Richie Recor, who missed the 1983 game after undergoing knee surgery, is named the Offensive Player of the Game after running for 101 yards and 2 TDs and catching four passes for 61 yards as Beekmantown beats Ogdensburg 20-6 to win its third North Country Super Bowl. Linebacker Kevin Gregoire is MVP.

MVP Jack Hills scores 3 touchdowns while Offensive standout Fred Granger runs for 143 yards and a score to lead Ticonderoga to a 41-0 victory over St. Lawrence Central in the North Country Class B football playoff. Linebacker Dan Decker is the Defensive star.

Two-time state champion Cherry Valley defeats Chazy 5-0 in the Class D final for girls' soccer.

Jeff McCasland scores 24 points and grabs 17 rebounds to lead the Clinton Community College Cougars, coached by Paul Harrica, to a 74-67 win over the Norwich JV. Johnny Amell chips in with 19 while Ken Recore has 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Jackie DiRenzo, Meagan McCarthy, Krista Bunnell and Kim Brenner lead PHS to the Section VII gymnastics crown, ending Ticonderoga's two-year reign. The Sentinels' Lynn Coffin is the all-around champion.

Northeastern Clinton star Andy Guay finishes sixth in Class B boys' while Beekmantown's Sue Klein is 10th in Class B girls in state cross country.

30 YEARS AGO (1979)
MVP Andy Light completes 9 of 10 passes for 144 yards and 4 touchdowns (2 each to Bryan Foster and Joe Burl) as Beekmantown beats Carthage 35-16 to win the first North Country Super Bowl. End Mike Sears is the defensive standout while Mike Gregoire and Todd Desrocher also star on defense.

MVP Frank Dumoulin runs for 164 yards and a touchdown and Larry Root runs for one score and passes to Robbie Eggsware for another as Tupper Lake downs Moriah 29-0 in the first North Country Class B playoff. Jim Dumoulin also scores for the Lumberjacks.

Sue Palmer and Kim Wintermute lead unbeaten Willsboro to a 3-0 victory over Dannemora in girls' volleyball.

40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Former Peru and Penn State standout Leon Angevine has 2 long catches for the Pottstown Firebirds in their 23-7 victory over Richmond for the Southern Division title in the Atlantic Coast Football League. Pottstown is an affiliate of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sophomore linebacker Roger LeBel, an MAI graduate, is in on 22 tackles to help William Penn College defeat Culver Stockton 31-20.

Bluff Point Country Club cancels the contract of club golf pro John Doctor.

Dick Keegan and Bill Garvey of Plattsburgh State named to the All-SUNYAC team in men's soccer.

50 YEARS AGO (1959)
St. John's alum Ron Cote is named to the Arizona State Football Hall of Fame after rushing for 712 yards, despite missing a game and a half with an injury.

Norm Gates tosses in 30 points as the Port Henry Hawks open defense of their Essex County Semi-Pro Basketball League title with a 55-51 victory over Ethan Allen Air Force Base.

Fred Morgan's 16 points and Gary Murphy's floor play lead Willsboro to a 58-45 opening win over Northwood.

Maynard Ducatte, the former St. John's star, is elected co-captain of the University of Vermont football team for the 1960 season.

60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Roy McGee scores 12 points and Paul Green, 10, as the Peru Legionnaires defeat Mooers 46-23. Jim Norcross leads Mooers with 10 points.

Bob Garrow scores 17 points and Norm Fleury, 14, to lead Plattsburgh State Teachers College, coached by Ray James, to a 61-42 win over Alumni. Wally Stachowicz scores 15 points and Jim Brannigan, 13, for the Alumni.

70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Plattsburgh State Normal School, under Edward Redcay, adopts the nickname Cardinals for men's basketball.

Robert Cleveland is leading an effort to form the Plattsburgh Athletic Club, which will promote amateur sports.
