PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team took a combined 111 shots on goal in two games against Chatham over the weekend.
The Cardinals didn't put as many of those in the net as they would have liked, but still came away with two 4-1 victories to open their season in ECAC-West play.
Plattsburgh State outshot the Cougars (0-4), 51-15, Sunday in winning its second straight.
"We didn't have a very good shooting percentage," said Plattsburgh State head coach Kevin Houle. "But, we still played pretty well all weekend in getting four points.
"We did create a lot of chances and I would have liked to have seen us score more goals. But, we accomplished what we set out to do this weekend and, hopefully, the goals will come for us."
The Cardinals scored three of their four goals on special teams, including two power-play goals and one short-handed tally. Houle said there's room for improvement, however.
"Our powerplay wasn't that good and one of the goals came at the tail end of the powerplay," he said. "I'd like to see us move the puck a little better."
Steph Moon gave the Cardinals (2-0, 2-0) the lead with a short-handed goal at 14:13 of the first period and Laurie Bowler made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 17:53.
Stephanie Moberg's even-strength tally put Plattsburgh State up, 3-0, with 4:21 gone in the second period.
Lauren Campbell's power-play goal pulled Chatham to within two goals at 5:36 of the third before Jordan Caldwell netted a power-play marker for the Cardinals at 7:50 to restore the three-goal advantage, at 4-1.
"I felt we played better yesterday," Houle said. "We got the lead early today and didn't play as desperate as we did yesterday when we fell behind, 1-0."
Anne Loewen stopped 14 of 15 shots in net for the victory, while Brenn Scott made 47 stops for the Cougars, including a combined 37 over the final two periods.
"To hold them to a combined 25 shots on the weekend is pretty good," Houle said.
The Cardinals return to the ice this coming weekend when they host ECAC-West rival Elmira for two games at the Stafford Ice Arena — Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
