PLATTSBURGH — Chazy boys soccer coach Rob McAuliffe said his players take pride in the fact that they are representing a program with a winning tradition.
The 2009 team has embraced the history of Eagles' soccer and made a contribution of its own by bringing Chazy to the state final four tournament for the 10th time in 13 years with a 5-0 Class D quarterfinal victory over Harrisville Saturday.
Chazy will face Hamilton in Oneonta at 1 p.m. Friday in semifinal action.
Tyler Bulriss and Brandon Laurin each scored twice in the game, with Laurin finding the back of the net 1:03 in the game on a good individual effort, weaving through defenders inside the box.
"It was outstanding to start the way we did with the quick goal," McAuliffe said. "But I don't think we played all that well in the first half after that goal.
"We didn't have very much intensity," he added. "In a way, Brandon carried us through the first half because he ran hard every time he had the ball, and we didn't have a lot of the for most of the half."
Bulriss scored with just over five minutes remaining in the first half and scored 16:44 into the second.
Kaleb Snide assisted on Laurin's first goal and Kyle McCarthy got the assist on Bulriss' second.
"We began to pass the ball a little better in the second half," McAuliffe said.
Chazy outshot Harrisville by a 30-2 margin, but Harrisville goalkeeper Colin Baker made big saves early and the Pirates' defense blocked just as many shots.
Nathan Reynolds extended the Eagles' lead to 4-0 with a goal midway through the second half on a John Tregan assist.
Laurin then netted his second of the day at 30:03, capitalizing on a scramble in front of the net after a corner kick.
Shea Howley assisted on Laurin's second score.
McAuliffe said he knew it was possible to get to the final four this season based on the quality of players he had on the roster. But he added that it was going to be a little tougher than in recent years because it was such a young and inexperienced group with only four seniors in the starting lineup.
"The boys believed we could get to this point," he said. "Now, It's basically a new season next weekend."
