Cards have hands full

DID YOU KNOW?

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team has had to go into penalty kicks in its last two games.

There's a chance that trend could continue this afternoon.

The Cardinals (13-2-6) play at the University of Rochester (12-1-3) at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Yellowjackets play a very competitive schedule and have allowed just nine goals in 16 games.

"They don't give up a lot of goals — they're tough defensively and big and strong," said Plattsburgh State head coach Chris Waterbury. "They create a lot of match-up problems for opponents.

"They haven't lost at home. They're a very structured team and difficult to break down. They're intelligent and don't make many mistakes."

That will only make it that more difficult for the Cardinals, who have not scored in their last two games against very tough competition.

Plattsburgh State, however, hasn't allowed any goals during that time as the team continues to play extremely well defensively.

Rochester had a bye in the opening round of the tournament, while Plattsburgh State played Bowdoin to a scoreless tie through regulation and the two overtimes at home Thursday before prevailing, 6-5, in penalty kicks.

"We're definitely the underdogs," Waterbury said. "There certainly aren't any easy games now and the question is if we can play one more game.

"We had a pretty easy practice on Friday. The guys' legs were tired."

Rochester is ranked first in the East Region and the Cardinals are fifth. Nationally, the Yellowjackets are ranked No. 8 in the NCSCAA/Adidas poll and the Cardinals, 19th.

The Cardinals and Yellowjackets have five opponents in common.

Rochester has compiled a 4-0-1 record against St. John Fisher (W, 1-0), Oswego (W, 2-0), Cortland (W, 4-2), St. Lawrence (W, 2-1) and Clarkson (T, 0-0, OT).

Meanwhile, Plattsburgh State is 3-1-1 against St. John Fisher (W, 2-1), Oswego (L, 1-2, OT), Cortland (W, 2-1), St. Lawrence (T, 1-1, OT) and Clarkson (W, 3-1).

This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2004 when Rochester posted a 2-0 win in the ECAC Upstate Finals. The Yellowjackets own a 4-1 record in the series and have won the last four meetings.
