MORRISVILLE — The forwards on the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team had trouble finding the back of the net Saturday night.

The Cardinals' defensemen didn't, however.

Backliners scored the Cardinals' first four goals, including the first three by freshmen, as Plattsburgh State skated past Morrisville, 5-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.

In fact, freshmen accounted for four of the five Plattsburgh State goals.

"It was great to see those guys get on the board," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "Morrisville allowed us to get a lot of shots from the point and we were able to get some through.

"We could have scored more goals. We had some Grade A chances that we didn't capitalize on. But, the name of the game is not how many goals you score, but how many you keep out of your net. And, we did a good job keeping the puck out tonight."

The Cardinals, bouncing back from their first loss of the season last Saturday against Oswego, improved their SUNYAC and overall record to 4-1.

The Mustangs, who skated to a 5-3 win over Potsdam the night before, are 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead after one period on Paul Puglisi's goal at 10:26.

Plattsburgh State then broke it open in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza when Mike Grace tallied a power-play goal at 3:19, Cody Adams an unassisted goal at 5:59 and Mike Kavanagh a power-play goal at 9:53 for a 4-0 lead.

"I was pleased to get the 4-0 lead on the road," Emery said. "And, against a pretty good team."

Adam Laite got one of the goals back for Morrisville at 15:34, only to have Ian DeLong put the Cardinals back up by four with 11:40 gone in the third period.

Forward Dan Sliasis, playing his first game of the season after being out with an injury, picked up an assist.

"Dan was our best player out there tonight — it was good to have him back," Emery said. "He played hard and showed great leadership.

"Everyone who got their number called tonight did well. We're still a work in progress, but it was a good win for us."

The Cardinals finished with a one-sided 47-24 shot advantage, including a combined 33-13 margin over the final two periods of the game.

Ryan Williams stopped 23 of 24 shots in net for Plattsburgh State and Caylin Relkoff 42 of 47 shots for the Mustangs.

The Cardinals head back on the road this coming weekend for conference games at Buffalo State on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday.

In other SUNYAC action Saturday, Geneseo edged out a 3-2 win over Buffalo State and Fredonia was a 5-3 winner at Brockport. Oswego nipped Utica, 3-2, in a non-conference game.
