TICONDEROGA — When Rensselaer's Jashem Hamilton took the opening play from scrimmage to the end zone on a 65-yard rush against Moriah Friday in Ticonderoga, it looked like it may be a long night.

And it was — but not for Moriah.

The Vikings responded by taking the lead early in the second quarter and never gave it back, defeating the Rams, 28-25, in NYSPHSAA Class D quarterfinal action Friday night.

Despite the close final score, the majority of the game wasn't.

Moriah's Ron Schofield gained nearly as many yards as Rensselaer's entire offense and scored three times on the ground.

"Our guys just took control at the line of scrimmage," Moriah coach Don Tesar said. "Ron played a great game, but the big guys up front sometimes don't get as much credit as they deserve."

Moriah is slated to face Eldred of Section IX in the semifinals. The game will be played Friday at 4 p.m. at Dietz Stadium in Kingston.

Down 7-6 after the half, Rensselaer stole some momentum by recovering an onside kick to open the third quarter.

But Moriah got the ball back on a fumble recovery two plays later and capped the ensuing drive with a 1-yard Schofield run.

"We've been starting slow in games, but once we get warmed up we really play tough," said Moriah quarterback Nate Gilbo, who tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Tom Tesar in the second quarter. "And our defense always steps up."

The Vikings went up two scores by converting a two-point try after the second touchdown, but the next play put the game all but out of reach.

Wally Edwards recovered a squib kick on the next exchange to give Moriah possession, and Schofield again capped the drive with a rushing score.

"That was the biggest play of the game, I think, because we drove it right down and scored again," Tesar said.

Rensselaer's Mico Delos Santos threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Timmy Foust to cut into Moriah's lead, but the Vikings again responded with a rushing score of their own.

Foust and Nate Butler scored rushing touchdowns for the Rams late in the second half.
