Hockey legend Stan Moore dies
MASSENA — High-school hockey legend Stan Moore of Massena died last week at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena. He was 79.
Moore, who played for Clarkson University and began coaching at Massena in 1960, compiled a record of 522-141-15 and his Red Raiders earned 17 Section 10 and seven state championships. He held the state mark for victories until Salmon River Coach Bill Plante eclipsed him in 2006.
Adams Turkey Trot slated for Nov. 26
PERU — The Peru Lions Club will host the 32nd-Annual John P. Adams Memorial Turkey Trot on Nov. 26. Registration for the Thanksgiving Day event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Peru Intermediate School cafeteria next to the Route 22B playground.
The one-mile fun run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. and the 5- and 10-kilometer races, shortly afterward. Entry fee for the 5- and 10K events are $15 and the mile fun run and walk is $5.
Trophies are awarded to the male and female winners of the 5 and 10K events and ribbons given to the Top-3 finishers of each age group. Runners towels will be given to all participants in the 5 and 10K races. All participants are entered in the drawings for turkeys and other prizes.

Cardinals seeking scoring table workers
PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State Athletics Dept. is seeking to compile a pool of adult workers to staff scoreboard, shot clock and public address announcing during Cardinals' home basketball games this season. Previous experience is necessary as well as having knowledge of basketball timing rules.

Award-winning journalist to speak at PSU
PLATTSBURGH — Charles Pierce, the renowned sports journalist, National Public Radio contributor and author of the best-selling book "Idiot America," will give a speech on media, ethics and the law at Plattsburgh State Thursday, Dec. 3 in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall, at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
"There is only one Charles Pierce," said journalist Eric Alterman, according to Pierce's Web site. "His unique combination of gonzo, erudition, fearlessness, and eloquence ... help us make sense of a senseless world. I stand in awe, and appreciation."
The event is being sponsored by the New York Newspaper Foundation and the college's Center for Communication and Journalism. It is free and open to the public.
Pierce has written for the alternative press, including Worcester Magazine and The Boston Phoenix, and was a sports columnist for The Boston Herald. He was a feature writer and columnist for the late, lamented sports daily The National. He has been a writer-at-large for a men's fashion magazine, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The L.A. Times Magazine, The Nation, The Atlantic, and The Chicago Tribune, among others.
He appears weekly on National Public Radio's sports program "Only a Game" and is a regular panelist on NPR's game show "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me!" Since July 1997, he has been a writer at large at Esquire, and, in April 2002, he joined the staff of The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine.
In 2004, he won a National Headliners Award for his Globe Magazine piece, "Deconstructing Ted."
AuSable awards ceremony Nov. 19
CLINTONVILLE — AuSable Valley Athletics will hold its fall season sports awards ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 19 in the AVCS middle/high school auditorium. The presentation will start at 6 p.m. with the celebration for the seniors, then a breakout session for each individual sport will follow.
All fall athletes, parents/guardians and community members are welcome to attend.
Peru youth hoop registration under way
PERU — The Peru youth basketball program has sent registration information to all boys in grades 3-6 through school distribution.

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College women's basketball game with Schenectady CC scheduled for Saturday has been canceled. Schenectady does not have enough players.
The Clinton CC men's basketball game Saturday versus Schenectady has been moved to 1 p.m.
Bowl Mart, Columbia 300 to host clinic
CHAMPLAIN — Bowl Mart Lanes and Columbia 300 will present the First-Annual Champlain Bowling Clinic Saturday, Nov. 28. Tom Laskow and Matt O'Grady and others from Better Bowling Concepts will be the elite instructors.
The cost is $125 per bowler. The clinic includes six hours of lanes, classroom and personal coaching, tips on practice techniques, equipment and layouts, breakfast, lunch and raffles.
Available options include video-taping sessionsd and ball drilling.
