Seton girls make it to quarterfinals

MASSENA — Even though Seton Catholic was dominating possession, the Knights were still sitting on just a one-goal lead in the second half Tuesday.

Then Lindsey Bushey netted her second of the night to give them what turned out to be plenty of breathing room.

Seton Catholic beat Brushton-Moira 2-0 to advance to the NYSPHSAA Class C girls' soccer regional final. The Knights (14-4) will play Saturday at Plattsburgh High School against the winner of today's Section II title game between Cambridge and Fort Plain.

Seton Catholic outshot the Panthers 12-4.

"It's frustrating though because 2-0 doesn't really signify the victory," Seton Catholic coach Jason Fenner said, adding that he thought his team controlled play about 80 percent of the second half. "That shows you that it really doesn't matter. It matters putting the ball in the net."

Bushey took care of that for the Knights. She brought the ball in from the left side, drew the goalkeeper across and put it in the net 25:41 into the first half. In the second half, the eighth-grader took the ball away from a defender inside the 18 and drilled it into the far corner.

"The second one was just sheer work ethic," Fenner said. "She just kept digging, kept digging. It popped out, and she finished it."

Both goals were unassisted.

Before her second goal, Bushey had a great chance after taking a pass from Rhea Breyette, but her shot bounced off the right post. Brushton-Moira keeper Emily LaPage thwarted another good Seton Catholic opportunity when she made a quick save on a header.

Fenner said even after the Knights increased their lead, he was still wary of the Panthers.

"With that kind of offensive strategy that they have, that boot and run, it's really difficult to combat," Fenner said. "What I really like about my defense, we get it back on the ground and get it back up to our midfield. And I'll tell you what, the defense played fantastic today."

Shannon Olsen stopped all four shots she faced in the Seton Catholic nets. LaPage finished with nine saves for the Panthers (10-8).

This was the second straight year the teams met in regional play and the second year Seton Catholic came away with a shutout. But Brushton-Moira coach Charles Phippen said his team had a much better showing this time.

"They clearly have all kinds of speed and lots of skill at every position," Phippen said of the Knights. "I've got the utmost respect for their program. They played a good game.

"I'm proud of our program. Even though we lost, I think we're making progress, and maybe we'll catch Seton Catholic next year."

The Knights weren't happy with the way they played in the opening minutes of the game. But they shook off those early struggles and were pretty sharp the rest of the way.

"We were pumped up. We just got on the pitch and were just flat," Fenner said. "I don't know if we expected things to just go our way. But this is it. It's win-or-go-home time, that's what I keep telling them.

"There was even a little bit of frustration internally, too. That slowly subsided, and we got back into what we do."
