PLATTSBURGH — Clinton Community College came out firing, knocking down nine 3-pointers before halftime, on its way to a 77-59 victory over visiting Adirondack Community College Friday night in women's basketball.
The Cougars (2-1) quickly got in front and by intermission, led ACC 45-27. Adirondack never got closer than 15 after halftime and Clinton enjoyed a 25-point bulge at one point.
"We played well. We came out shooting very well, we shared the ball — we had 22 assists — and we played really good defense the first half and shut down their big kids," Clinton Coach Donna Dixon said.
Johni Rae Coryea scored all 14 of her points in the first half with Andrea Garcia and Shannon Nutbrown each chipping in with 12.
Nutbrown went on to lead all scorers with 18 points, to go along with 20 rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks.
"Shannon had a huge game," Dixon added.
Adirondack (0-2) adjusted its defense to cut down on Clinton's perimeter shooting, but the Cougars responded by getting the ball inside. Brittany Godreau scored 14 in the half and Carissa Fournia, 10.
Clinton held a big edge in rebounding, grabbing 36 defensive boards and 16 off the offensive glass. Coryea had 11, along with six assists and a steal while Fournia collected five rebounds and five assists and Garcia, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
"Andrea Garcia played her best game yet as a freshman," Dixon said.
